Seraphina's pov
From the perch, high on this rock, I could hear the faint whispers, barely audible of the people. I hoped the Agreement feast went well and okay. That deal was huge for everyone.
Then Sophie's happy face popped into my head, how her face had all lit up about the feast. Her eyes practically sparkled about meeting her mate there. I just grinned to myself. "All the best in finding your mate, Sophie," I whispered.
Ariana, my wolf, stirred in my head. Her voice was soft and calm. "You know," she murmured inside my head, "if you'd gone to the feast, maybe we would have found him too."
A heavy sigh escaped me, loud and filled with nervousness and sadness. "What if I had found him?" I mumbled. "What if he... didn't want someone like me?" Then I let out another shaky breath, and began humming to Didi's song slowly;
(Line 1)
In the still of night, where shadows play,
The moonlight whispers secrets, guiding the way.
Through the trees, your spirit roams free,
A heart wild and untamed, just like the sea.
(Chorus)
Oh, dance with the stars, let your worries fade,
In this world of dreams, where destinies are made.
With every heartbeat, I feel the magic flow,
You're never alone; the moonlight will glow.
(Line 2)
Soft winds carry tales of the ancient kin,
With every breath, let the journey begin.
In the quiet moments, find your strength within,
An unbroken bond, where love will always win.
(Chorus)
Oh, dance with the stars, let your worries fade,
In this world of dreams, where destinies are made.
With every heartbeat, I feel the magic flow,
You're never alone; the moonlight will glow.
I was midway through the next verse of my song. That's when I heard Footsteps, Faint at first, and this weird scent hit me too. It was heavy, something unnatural. Immediately, my senses flared. My wolf instincts screamed alert. Pure fear shot through me. I scrambled down from the high rock, scanning everywhere. I had to recheck, but I saw nothing. "Alright," I told myself. "Time to head home."
On the walk back, that strange scent returned. This time, it was much closer. I turned around and there he was someone who masked himself, tailing behind me. Terror took over as I broke into a run as fast as I could.
After a bit, I risked another look and saw that he was gone. Where did he disappear to? My mind raced, and my heart hammered as I pushed myself even harder and faster. Suddenly, a forceful push from behind, and I stumbled right into the deep bush. A scream ripped from my throat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'd been out for hours, just rambling through the quiet pack lands. My feet kept pulling me deeper into the thick woods. The branches brushed my face as I pushed on.
Then it hit me. A mix of sharp cries and strange smells pierced the calm. Kai, my wolf, instantly tensed. I felt him snap awake inside me. "She's here," his voice rumbled Raw and Urgent. "I can smell her, Mate's in trouble." He was furious, pushing to take over. I fought him back, not yet, as I kept moving, zeroing in on the scent.
That's when I saw her. A guy, face hidden by a mask, was on top of her. Trying to force himself on her. My vision narrowed, and Kai roared in my head. He fought to take control. To shred apart the guy, but I held him back. I had to do this myself. I lunged at the guy. My fist flew and connected with the guy's jaw, Hard. I kept hitting him over and over, fueled by anger.
Her voice broke through. A soft plea. "Please stop. "You'll kill him." I heard her, but I couldn't stop. Not yet, I just kept going. My punches kept landing until he was weak, barely moving and near conscious, I finally pulled away from him. I left him there, crumpled on the ground.
Then I turned to her. Our eyes met, and we both continued staring at each other.
Then her scream tore through the air. "Watch out!" The masked guy somehow was on his feet and had come at me from behind. A flash of metal, and a knife sank into my shoulder. The pain ripped through me and A sharp, angry hiss escaped my lips. My rage flared hotter than ever as I spun around to grab him by the neck and slammed him to the ground.
Then, my hand went to my shoulder to pull the knife out and drove it into his stomach.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I stood on the ground, hot tears streaming down my face. My eyes fixed on him. A searing pain twisted my gut. This was my fault, all of it. If I'd listened to Ariana, my wolf, if I'd gone to the feast. None of this would have happened. My mate wouldn't be hurt. Not because of me.
Still crying, I watched him. My mate, in a blur of rage, slammed the masked man down. Pulled the knife from his shoulder. Then, he plunged it deep into the attacker's stomach. I just watched Frozen, Helpless, and Useless.
Soon, the masked man was still. My mate rose and moved toward me, anger radiating off him. "Why?" His voice cut through the air, just hearing his voice... I felt butterflies, a strange flutter in my stomach. What was this? Maybe it's the Mate pull? It hit me and the whole awful scene faded.
"Why do you even exist?" he repeated. I stared, confused. He laughed, a cold, wicked sound. "Why would the Goddess be so dumb?" he sneered. "Giving me someone like you as a mate?" A knife twisted in my chest. I said nothing and continued watching him.
"Get up," he said, flat. "I'll get you out of here." I didn't move. My gaze stayed fixed on him. "Oh, great," he muttered. "The Goddess even cursed me with a dumb mate." He walked over. Grabbed my arm and yanked me off the ground. I didn't fight it, I let him pull me up
He shoved me forward. "Walk," he growled. "Now." Before I do something I'll regret." I started moving fast and he followed close behind. We walked in silence.
After a while, my house appeared, and I stopped at the door. He stopped too.
I turned to look at him. My voice was soft. "Thank you. "For today," I swallowed. "I know you don't want me. You're disappointed about having someone like me as your mate. "Can I at least help with your injury, please?" I asked, hoping he'd say yes.
His response was cold. "Just go in." I'll be fine," he said. His voice flat
My eyes stung, and tears pushed hard against them. So, am I truly this bad, that no one wants me, even my mate sees me as a curse?
I swallowed the tears and fought them back. I nodded, pushed the door open, and stepped inside.
