Chapter 9There was a sound like the waves of the sea, pounding unceasingly, relentlessly against her consciousness – Out of the darkness, like coming back through a long tunnel, Alida found herself listening and then suddenly, as if a knife had been thrust through her heart, she thought she must be at sea! She was being taken back to England! She was leaving Russia! With a little murmur, she tried to move and found it was impossible – feebly her eyelids fluttered. Someone put a hand under her head and she felt something cool against her lips. Automatically she sipped. Then a gentle voice speaking in French said softly, “You are safe. Dormez bien, ma petite.” Alida wanted to ask questions, but it was too much of an effort. Darkness was encompassing her once more – she drifted away
