"Did you get through?" Abby came out of the bathroom, brushing the creases in her uniform out.
"Yes... I did. It cut out a few times but they know I am here and they know I am safe. I said we would chat later to sort out the rest."
Liar!
"Oh, well that's good to hear." She didn't look up at me as she was tying her shoes up. "I'm going to head downstairs to help them out, this flat is all yours." She gives me one last smile before heading out the door. "Oh, and we don't charge rent." she shouts as I hear her head downstairs.
I let the water wash over me, cleansing me of the events of this weekend so far: the challenge, the all-out battle, the death of my father, being beaten to near death myself, meeting Abby. That was the one light in these memories.
My mind drifts back to the battle: Who is left? Did the others make it? The last I saw of Austin, Naomi and Dan they were helping in the evacuation. Were they chased down like me?
Dan had other things to worry about. His other half, Siobhan, wasn't at the battle due to being heavily pregnant. Did he make it back to her? I pray that she wasn't discovered.
My mother... mum... She saw dad die but I was too encompassed by the loss of dad that I don't even know if she left with the others, stayed behind to fight with her friends or was she killed and left behind.
I pressed my head against the shower. Think positive - they made it. We will reunite with them soon.
I finish off and change into the jeans and top Abby lent me, luckily the top stretched a lot better than the vest.
I head back down and sit back at the bar. Abby, Maeve and the others run around me serving the lunchtime rush but Abby does drop me off some fish and chips enroute to serving another table. "On the house." she says as she swiftly moves away.
The shift starts to wind down and it was almost closing time so I helped start the clean up duties. The sun had just gone below the horizon, casting the sky in an array of colours.
I was taking another swig from my beer when I clock a lady in a sleeveless trench coat walk past the window; her red hair coming out from the beanie.
Sh*t! Alexis!
I down the rest of my pint and make my way out back - the sight before me sent ice through my veins.
Abby was talking to Alexis and Zack by the lake tables. I didn't like this - not one bit. I march over there. I need to get Abby away.
"Colt! There you are! We have been looking for you!" Alexis holds her arms out wide as I approach. I stand slightly in front of Abby and stare them down.
"It's a lovely place you have found yourself in. We were just talking to Abby here about how picturesque it was." She gestures over my shoulder to where Abby was.
I feel Abby clasp my shoulder. "I will leave you to catch up, I have to help Maeve tidy up. You know where I am if you need me." And she steps in front of me, extending her hand towards the maniacs.
"It was lovely to meet Colt's friends, perhaps we could do this again sometime." Oh Abby, don't!
Zack takes Abby's hand whilst Alexis clasps her shoulder. "Any friend of Colt's is a friend of ours, enjoy the rest of your shift. We will be just poaching Colt for a bit as he needs to catch us up on everything." The way Zack spoke to her made my skin crawl, Abby didn't clock it but she had not seen his sadistic side.
Abby just smiles and saunters back to the pub for closing time. We waited for her to go back inside before Zack spoke up.
"Cute little mate you got there, Colt. Does she know who you really are?" Zack snides in my direction, I return a death stare at both of them. "We didn't think so."
"Just leave her out of this. She has done nothing." My jaw becomes rigid. I didn't intimidate them but I would try.
"We might, but no promises." Alexis stares bored at her fingernails. "We have unfinished business, now we can do it here in front of everyone or we can take it elsewhere. What do you say?" Zack curtly asks whilst suggesting we walk further away. I hold firm, it was never just as simple as that. I just cross my arms and stand tall.
"No, I don't trust you!" They both start chuckling at that statement.
"Wise move but you shouldn't be worrying about us. Haven't you questioned where Reuben is?"
My eyes widen in shock. No! I scan my surroundings, I can see Abby had just started jogging back home along the lake heading east and just behind her is Reuben, he smiles at me before he continues his hunt. "We said we might not hurt her, but Reuben on the other hand..."
Abby! I go to run after her but Alexis and Zack block my path. "Ah, ah, ahhh! She is leaving you with your friends. Now, you can leave her with our friend." Alexis smiles before chuckling manically at me.
We have got to ditch them quickly and get to Abby - we know what Reuben is capable of.
I had to end this fight quickly, try and feint them both to create an opening so I can make a break for it.
A faint scream echoes across the lake, sweeping a smug look across the faces of Zack and Alexis.
Sh*t! Abby! Hold on! I'm coming!
"If there is even a slither of a mark on her, I will make you suffer as much pain as physically possible before I end you both." I seethe, letting my anger roll off of me in waves.
"Ooh, are you making threats at us?"
"We are so shaken." They mock, feigning scared looks etched onto their faces.
"No... I only make promises." And with that, I charge at them both.
