34 - Abby POV

1528 Words
"So... you may have to hold up and rewind a bit. What happened yesterday?" Maeve looks puzzled as I try and explain everything that happened the day before. It was me and her in the kitchen all day, it was a steady lunch service so we were also planning our Halloween festivities that were going to happen in three weeks. It was just me and her in the back, everyone else was up front serving. I was in the back because, despite how much makeup I had put on, you could still see the bruise on my head so I was wearing a chef bandana to cover it and hiding from the others. How were we managing the orders? One word - Maeve. Now I knew about her being a witch, she was quite happy to do magic in front of me. So now, she was currently using her gifts to cook several dishes at once whilst I was on pot wash; she said she could do it but I wanted to do something. We also had Adelaide on call but she wasn't on the phone. Maeve and her had done some magic so we could see Adelaide on the surface of the fridge. She was on shift but on a lunch break so we were on her dashboard. "Colt's mother kills herself after digging her nails into me and then I am all the tough S.O.Bs enemies in the pack which includes Colt's ex." I repeat myself. "Do you need me to take a look at your wounds?" Adelaide stares out of the fridge reflection. They had scabbed over and weren't actually as deep as expected but I was wearing long sleeves to cover them - means less questions. I roll my sleeves up and hold my arms up to the fridge. This was so weird. I rotate them over so she can examine them. She nods but then gives a sigh. "I'm just glad he had the sense to send you away from there. That pack sounds terrible." "Not all of them. Just most of the warriors and his ex." I correct her, rolling down my sleeves and getting back to the cleaning. "Oh yerr, do you want us to hex her?" Maeve looked serious about that as she magics the elements together on a plate, placing it on the serving hatch before snapping her fingers to ring the bell. "Service." The fridge was out of view from the hatch so no one would see Adelaide looking annoyed at Maeve. "Don't even joke about the use of dark magic, M." Adelaide chastises her after Amyleigh had collected the plate. "But she sounds like she could use one." Maeve whines before turning to me. "How come you didn't use the pendant?" "For which part - the mother or the ex?" "Both" Even Adelaide was waiting for my answer. "For the mum, does the fact she have a hold of both my arms give you a hint that I couldn't!?" I look at them - they didn't look like they had thought of that. "As for the ex, she wasn't dangerous, just annoying." I remark as I stack the plates back where they sit. "Besides, I gave her a smack down she deserved." "Yes! That's my Abby! Takes sh*t from no one - just like I taught you." She high fives me whilst her magical blue light continues to assemble our dishes for us. Adelaide just rolls her eyes at us. "Seriously, you were literally in the wolf den and you slap one? A crazy one at that?" "Such a buzzkill." Maeve slings her arm over my shoulder. "Our Abby, the human, took on the wolves and lives to tell the tale." I smile before realising what she had said. "Why did you have to word it like that?" "Well... you did survive. You are covered in battle scars and Colt is giving you guards to avoid anymore." She points out where the marks were on me from the last week. "Don't remind me, please. I have told Colt they are to be out of sight so I can feel like I have a normal life." I sit on the counter and swing my legs. "Washings done." Maeve gives me a round of applause and I tip my fake hat to her. Adelaide shakes her head at us. "OK, I gotta run. Abby, stay safe. Maeve, stay out of trouble." "When do I ever get into trouble?" "All the time!" Both me and Adelaide say before we laugh and wave our goodbyes whilst Maeve looks stunned at me. *knock knock* We turn to the door and see Colt standing at the door with his hands behind his back. "Colt, what brings you here?" He comes up to me and pulls his hands from behind his back, a bouquet of roses blooms in front of me. "Oh Colt, they are beautiful!" I take them and smell them, letting a smile fall on my face. Maeve snaps her fingers and a vase appears next to us filled with water. "Thank you Maeve, would you mind helping me with another little task?" Colt asks and whispers something in her ear. Her eyes widen with delight and she nods enthusiastically. She snaps her fingers again and a picnic basket appears in her hands - she passes it to me and gives me a wink. "Enjoy." Colt takes my hand. "Come with me. She has given me permission to take you to lunch." And he walks me outside to the lake. There is a picnic blanket and a few more roses scattered about. I giggle at the sight, it was so sweet and thoughtful of him. "I am not exactly dressed for this." Looking down at my uniform. He chuckles and pulls me down on the blanket. "I think you look great, you have the rock chick vibe going on right now." That made us both laugh but I guess he had a point by the looks of me. We sit down and chat about everything whilst dining on our food. Honestly, it felt like that first night we walked back from pub together. I look at Colt and we smile at each other. "I have missed that smile." He says as he strokes my cheek. "I have missed yours too." I reply. We had both been through a lot this week. Hell, Colt lost his mother yesterday so I could only imagine the grief he was going through. I grab his hand and rest my face on his shoulder before sighing. "What a week." "Yes, but we believe in fate and destiny in my world. So, what ever the events, I am glad they led me to you." I turn to Colt and our eyes lock. I could feel this... pull towards him. Our heads slowly start to move closer together - our eyes flickering towards each others' lips then back to our eyes. My eyes begin to close as I anticipate what's to come. snap! We stop just an inch a part from each other and look in the direction it came from. "Jason?" I question as I see a figure behind the tree, hiding not so well. He meakily creeps out. "I... sorry, Alpha." Colt rolls his eyes and face palms. "Jason, you are supposed to be out of sight." "Right... I will go do that." and he marches off away from us but keeps spinning to check us every few metres. I look at Colt. "Sorry, Jason is new to the whole guard business." Colt explains. "He is the same age as you so we thought that would help but your his first assignment." "So I have a newbie guard?" I question, giving him a stare through my lashes. "Not just him. Nicole is also guarding you right now but is following the orders of out of sight like instructed." I huff and just shake my head. "Fine. But I don't want to see them. Normal human life means I'm independent." I reiterate. I was iritated because I now had two more people watching my every move, I wonder how closely they would be watching, but also, me and Colt were in a moment here. I look at my watch. "Oh, sh*t! I should head back." I start to grab my things. "Sorry Colt. We are short staffed so I am needed." He gets up, looking disappointed but nods. I hug him which he thankfully returns. Truth was - I needed a breather as nearly kissing Colt and the guards were doing all kinds of things in my head. "Listen, Abby." Colt grabs my hand as I am leaving. "We are having my mother's funeral tomorrow. Would you come?" He let some of the grief show for a second before his mask slipped back on. Squeezing his hand, I give him a nod. "I will be there." "Great, I'll come pick you up with the others." I let go of his hand and my smile falters. How many people do I need to pick me up? Answer - when you secretly have more than two guard.
