Thom felt his heart sink as he saw Sophie walk into the restaurant alone. He had hoped that Ava would change her mind about not coming to dinner. It had been a shock to the system, finding out that Ava was Sophie’s best friend, but did that discovery really change anything between them? That question had been playing him all day.
“Early, as always,” Sophie remarked, kissing his cheek.
“I can’t keep my best girl waiting, can I? She’s waited year’s as it is,” he smiled. Resisting the temptation to ask about Ava, he pulled out a chair and held it while Sophie seated herself.
“Thank you. Ava will be along soon. She's running late. Got herself lost in a book and didn’t realise the time.”
