The storm came without warning. Wind howled through the mountains, rattling the wooden walls of the cabin as snow slammed against the windows. The fire inside flickered wildly, struggling against the sudden cold that seeped through every crack.
Mia gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles white. Pain tore through her body. Sharp. Deep. Unrelenting. She gasped, her breath hitching as another wave crashed over her.
“Michael…” She cried out.
The elder was at her side instantly.
“It’s time,” he said, his voice steady but urgent.
Mia shook her head, panic flooding her chest.
“No… it’s too soon…”
Another contraction hit harder than the last, forcing a scream from her lips. Michael guided her carefully toward the bed.
“The child is ready,” he said. “You must be strong now.”
