Although the mountainous island has a few isolated beaches, cliffs averaging 150 feet high plunge into crashing surf around most of the island. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whalers occupied several settlements along the north side of the island. One of these, Grytviken, sits at the end of King Edward Cove off
