KIMBERLY
Two knocks on the door met my ears, my heart began palpitating again.
"Miss?!" I heard a masculine voice from behind the door.
I summoned courage and walked up to open the door.
"Good morning miss, you have to...." He started and I interrupted him almost immediately.
"I know.... Please give me more time" I pleaded.
"Miss Kimberly we have given you three months to pay up, this is the fourth month and we can no longer wait, you have four days to vacate the premises or I will have to forcefully send you out, time is ticking. Tick Tock" He gravely warned before walking out on me.
I felt a heavy weight been exerted on my heart, how am I supposed to get seventy thousand dollars in four days, all I was able to save was five hundred and fifty dollars, do I get a new job and quit my current job as a saleswoman?
Who would give me that large sum of money in such a short period? Where would I stay if I am forcefully thrown out?
I closed the door behind me and slumped on the couch, I constantly brainstormed on ideas, ideas that would fetch me money quickly.
Only thoughts of robbery, drug sales and stripping were guaranteed to solve my financial problems quickly but nothing safe and legal came to my mind.
I cannot do any of this, if I get jailed for any of these crimes who would help my sister at the hospital? Ever since she was diagnosed of cancer, I have doubled my work hours and taken multiple jobs just to pay her medical bills.
My life is a mess, my world is a mess. I have no one to turn to and my only family at this time is at the hospital fighting for her life.
Four years ago my parents died in a plane crash, the memories of them still lingered in my heart and mind.
As my thoughts took me down memory lane, my phone beeped and a caller's name popped up immediately.
I picked up the call and pressed the phone against my ear, what could be the doctor's reason for calling this time?
"Good morning Kimberly" She greeted politely.
"Good morning, how is my sister? Is she fine?" I anxiously inquired.
"She is fine, it's just...." she paused and sighed.
The anxiety and suspense was killing me, Oh God please I want to hear a good news and not a bad one.
"Doctor, is anything the problem, please speak up" I uttered nervously.
"She is fine, there is no serious issue infact she is improving but there is a problem, her bills are going to be increased due to the increment in medical equipment and materials. It is going to be eight hundred dollars every month instead of of the usual three hundred" She divulged.
My eyes widened in shock, an increase of five hundred dollars? This is more than twice the price I pay for her medical bills every month.
"What?! That is too high! How do you expect me to pay eight hundred dollars every month from three hundred? I was honestly struggling to keep up with the usual amount and now there is an increase? This has to be a joke" I retorted, I felt my breathe seizing slowly.
It was like a hand compressing my heart and stopping my flow of respiration.
"I am sorry Kim, but that is the price, if you fail to comply we will no longer have the capacity to take care of your sister, thank you" She ended the call immediately.
My orbs became teary, my head began to spin, in no time tears began rolling down my cheeks. I buried my face in my palms and let the river of tears flow down.
I felt so much pain, so much burden. My life is a train wreck, the bills kept pilling up and I did not know what to do.
Just as one problem surfaced, another stood at my doorstep waiting to knock me out.
"Kim?" A familiar masculine voice met my ears, I quickly wiped my tears and rose my head to meet Harden's gaze.
I was so buried in my whirlwind of sorrows that I did not notice his presence.
A worried look was plastered on his face as he gazed down at me. Harden was my closest friend, someone who always supported me irregardless of the fact that I rejected his proposal to be his girlfriend.
"What is the problem? I have been calling you" He sat next to me and tried to wipe off my tears.
"It's nothing" I quickly wiped them off.
"What's wrong, talk to me?" He urged me to speak.
"Everything is just going wrong, my sister's medical bills has increased and my house bills are overdue, I do not know what to do Harden, I am broke and tired, I have nothing" I sighed and held back my tears from escaping my eyelids.
"Wow, increased? to how much?" He inquired.
"Eight hundred dollars" I murmured.
"Eight hundred dollars? That's too much!..... Don't worry about it, just use this to pay for the month, I will speak to my dad to give me some more" He dug his hands into his pocket and handed over a bundle of cash.
"I am sorry I can not take this" I declined his offer politely, my conscience just does not like accepting people's hard earned money, yes his father was wealthy but he barely gave his money to anyone.
"C'mon you need it, have you eaten? you look really drained" He asked.
"Thank you, I have not" Reluctantly I collected the bundle of cash and carefully slid it into my pocket. From the depths of my heart I was grateful.
"Alright, use the remaining to get food from the supermarket, I will speak to my dad and see what I can do, I will come back later to check up on you" He said with a faint smile, I was so grateful for his help.
"Thank you so much Harden" I hugged and walked him out of the house, I still had this sting of guilt inside me.
My problems are not just a burden to me but a burden to others, now I feel like a burden to him.
******
Mrs Wester walked majestically into the supermarket with her maid behind her, clutching on to her handbag.
From her diamond-crusted earring to her elegant silver silk gown, she oozed of wealth and riches.
Every eye at the supermarket were stationed on her as she made her way in, every soul was so stunned to see Mrs Wester, one of the wealthiest woman in the city walking in their midst.
Her aim of going to the supermarket was different from the normal, she took no pleasure in shopping for food when her maids were there to get it done.
She had a plan to find a decent woman for Jaden since he could not do that for himself. What better place is there to find a decent girl than the supermarket? She walked in and scanned the premises, grading every young lady from head to toe unfortunately, the women around were not to her taste.
She plodded further and had her eyes on this drained looking lady, something in her piqued Mrs Westers interest and she was ready to find out what it was.
