My Territory, My Rules

When Sun Ling led Zhao Minghui and the others near the cave, Zheng Hai, Chu Yang, and the rest immediately spotted the sudden crowd. Lin Yue’s several friends immediately pulled out their small knives. Chu Yang also raised his nightstick, staring at them warily. “Sun Ling!” Chu Yang had sharp eyes and immediately spotted Sun Ling next to Zhao Minghui. He frowned and muttered to himself, “That guy ran off last night, and now he’s coming back with a bunch of people. What’s he up to?” “Nothing good,” snorted Lin Yue’s third roommate, Pan Kai. “It’s probably for the wolf meat.” As they spoke, Zhao Minghui led over forty people to an open spot not far from the cave entrance. Both groups sensed hostility from the other, and the atmosphere became tense. “Hey, isn’t that our biology teacher, Zhao Minghui?” One of the cave group recognized Zhao Minghui. He was about to call out to him, but Chu Yang stopped him. Chu Yang shook his head at him, then faced Zhao Minghui’s group and shouted, “You teachers and students ahead, what business do you have here?” Chu Yang’s implication was clear: this was their territory. Normally, teachers and students from the same school should have relied on each other. But in this strange, dangerous new world, no one could trust anyone else. On the first day after crossing, unaware of the truth, they might not have thought this way. But now, for survival, mutual wariness was unavoidable. Chu Yang was even thinking that Lin Yue had been incredibly generous to take them in yesterday. Zhao Minghui’s heart sank when he heard Chu Yang’s words. Being an experienced man, he immediately understood the implication. He knew that negotiating for food today would be difficult. Still, he felt he had to try. “Students, we heard from Sun Ling that you took food he discovered. We think that’s not right, and we ask you to return the food to him.” Zhao Minghui felt a bit guilty saying this. He knew Sun Ling was lying, but aside from this excuse, he couldn’t think of another way to ask for food. “What utter bullshit!” Fiery-tempered Pan Kai exploded. “That bastard Sun Ling—we gave him food, not a word of thanks, and he bites the hand that feeds him, claiming the wolf meat was his discovery. What a joke!” Zhao Minghui feigned surprise and looked at Sun Ling. “Sun Ling, is that so?” “Absolutely not! They’re lying!” Sun Ling, far from panicking at being exposed, shouted back at Pan Kai, “You’re the one talking bullshit! Monkey and I clearly found that giant wolf carcass. When they saw it, they took it by force because they outnumbered us. Now they’re trying to frame us! How shameless can you be?” Monkey also added his shouts, “That’s right! Shameless!” Now the entire cave group was furious, all cursing and seeming ready to rush over and tear Sun Ling apart. Seeing the situation, Zhao Minghui pretended to mediate. “Everyone, calm down. Maybe there’s been a misunderstanding. Why don’t you split the wolf meat equally?” Chu Yang sneered. Looking at Zhao Minghui, he said sarcastically, “Teacher Zhao, you’re supposed to be a role model for us, but you come out with such childish talk. Do you really think that’s possible?” Yang Qing also chimed in with Chu Yang’s tone. “Teacher Zhao, stop pretending. Anyone can see you came today for the wolf meat.” With Yang Qing exposing him, Zhao Minghui’s face turned red with embarrassment. He shouted, “How dare you talk to your teacher like that? You stole Sun Ling’s food. You’re in the wrong, and now you’re twisting the truth!” “Who’s twisting the truth?” Zheng Hai stepped forward and shouted. “Teacher Zhao, in the old days, we’d respect you as a teacher. But now we’re in this strange world, and everyone lives just to survive. Don’t you think it’s ridiculous to pull rank on us here?” Zhao Minghui was so angry he couldn’t speak. Several students behind him, seeing their teacher being disrespected, abandoned reason entirely. They raised their clubs and shouted, “Classmates, these bandits stole Sun Ling’s food and disrespect Teacher Zhao! What should we do?” “Beat them! Take back the food!” With those shouts, dozens of them swung their clubs and charged toward the cave like madmen. The development was so sudden that Zheng Hai and the others were a bit flustered. They gripped their weapons tightly, nervously watching the charging crowd. The students following Zhao Minghui actually knew that Sun Ling was lying. But for the sake of food, they had to do it. They had been hungry for a whole day, already half out of their minds. At this moment, they cared nothing for reason. To survive, they would turn their blades against their own schoolmates. Just as they were about to reach the cave, a stone suddenly fell from above, hitting the lead runner on the head. He collapsed immediately. Then several more stones flew, forcing the charging students to stop abruptly. Surprised by this sudden turn, everyone looked up. On a low cliff above the cave stood two figures. The lead one was tall, with sharp eyes. He opened his mouth and shouted coldly, “What? Who dares to make trouble on my territory?” The one who had suddenly appeared on the low cliff was none other than Lin Yue. When he had returned from the south, he heard the commotion from far away. So he took a shortcut, climbed to the cliff above the cave, and picked up a few stones to scare off the charging students. “Lin Yue!” Zheng Hai looked up and saw Lin Yue on the cliff, his face full of delight. Lin Yue was skilled and had presence. He would surely intimidate these people. Without further words, Lin Yue leaped directly off the low cliff—a height of two or three stories—landing on the ground. Everyone gasped in shock. The height was no small feat, but Lin Yue managed it. With the new world’s lower gravity and the survival techniques from his past life, he could jump from five or six meters without much trouble. “You want the wolf meat?” Looking at the fierce crowd of over forty students, Lin Yue said calmly. “You stole it!” shouted a stocky student. Although he knew the excuse was ridiculous, it was the only banner they could wave to fight for food. “How ridiculous.” Lin Yue laughed lightly. “Stop trying to find noble excuses. You want food? I’ll give it to you—on one condition.” Food was precious, but not that important to Lin Yue. On the contrary, if he could use the wolf meat to bring these dozens of people into their group, it would be a great bargain. So to Lin Yue, Sun Ling had brought not a big trouble, but a big gift. “What condition?” Zhao Minghui stepped closer. “Student, our actions today were out of desperation. We’re all from the same school. We hope you can spare some food to help us. Name your condition.” Seeing that they could get food without violence, the forty-plus students behind Zhao Minghui relaxed and shouted, “Tell us your condition!” Lin Yue gestured for them to quiet down. “This giant wolf was acquired through the joint efforts of our dozen or so people, so naturally it belongs to our collective. But if you want to share our wolf meat, you’re welcome to—join us.” “Lies! Senior Sun Ling hunted that giant wolf!” Monkey shouted from the distance. “Shut up!” Sun Ling quickly grabbed Monkey, then without another word, turned and fled. Sun Ling was smart. He knew today’s scheme had failed completely. If he stayed, he would only face the contempt and anger of the fifty-plus people.
