Chapter 9: The Combat Trials

986 Words
The day of the combat training had finally arrived at The Lost Universities, and the anticipation was palpable. The grand arena, divided into several combat zones, was set for the most intense match of the year. The stakes were high: the losing team would face the daunting task of running 100 laps around the field. Carfel stood with her team, Group 1, known as "Team Clint." The team comprised Clint, Jaype, Matthew, Mark, and herself. They were about to face off against Group 2, "Team Seven." Group 1: Team Clint - Clint. (Ice and Fire) - Jaype. (Air) - Matthew (Water) - Mark (Thunder) - Carfel (Time Control And Mind Reader) Group 2: Team Seven - Seven (Lightning Speed and Golem Summoning) - Mithzie (Weapon Summoning) - Aira (Healing and White Magic) - Maui (Teleportation) - Aran (Invisibility with Time Limit) Professor Hartley’s voice echoed through the arena. “Today’s match will test your skills and teamwork. The losing team will face the penalty of running 100 laps. Show us your best.” As the match began, the arena morphed into a tumultuous battleground. Seven immediately displayed his extraordinary speed, darting across the field with a blur. He summoned two enormous golems, their thunderous footsteps shaking the ground. Mithzie quickly summoned a barrage of weapons—swords, spears, and shields—each appearing in a burst of magic. Clint took the lead, his eyes blazing with determination. “Let’s show them what we’ve got!” he shouted. He hurled fireballs at the golems. “Fireball Barrage!” The fireballs exploded on impact, but the golems pressed on with barely any damage. Jaype, usually the class clown, now focused with a serious edge. “Hold them off!” he commanded, summoning a powerful whirlwind. The air roared around them, pushing back the golems and the summoned weapons. Matthew, calm and composed, analyzed the situation. “We need to control the battlefield,” he said. He summoned a massive wave of water. “Tidal Barrier!” The wave crashed against the golems, creating a shield that absorbed several attacks and disrupted Team Seven’s formation. Carfel, still adjusting to her newfound ability, used her temporal distortion to slow the golems’ advance. “Chronos Halt!” she whispered. The golems’ movements became sluggish, allowing Clint and the others to focus their attacks. Despite her efforts, Carfel felt an increasing weakness in her body; casting such potent magic drained her more than she expected. Aran, utilizing his invisibility, moved with stealth. “Watch out for Aran!” Carfel called, her mind-reading ability allowing her to sense his hidden attacks. She alerted Mark just in time, who used his thunder powers to fend off Aran. Mark, known for his tactical prowess, used his thunder abilities strategically. “Lightning Strike!” he yelled, sending a bolt of electricity that arced through the air and hit one of the golems. His calculated strikes proved effective. Aira, on Team Seven, employed her healing magic to keep her team in fighting shape. “Healing Light!” she chanted, casting a soothing glow over her teammates. Her spells mended their injuries, but even her powerful healing couldn’t keep up with the relentless assault from Team Clint. Maui, utilizing his teleportation ability, proved to be a significant asset. He appeared and disappeared at will, disorienting Team Clint with sudden shifts. “Teleportation Strike!” Maui would reappear behind the opponents, delivering quick and surprising attacks. His ability to move instantly across the battlefield created a dynamic challenge for Team Clint. As the battle progressed, Carfel’s new mind-reading ability provided valuable insights. She focused on Seven, sensing his intentions to summon more golems and use his speed to outmaneuver Team Clint. She warned her teammates, “Matthew, to your right!” Matthew redirected a surge of water, intercepting a newly summoned golem. Jaype’s whirlwind intensified, creating a storm that disrupted Team Seven’s tactics. Carfel’s energy began to wane as she continued to use her powers, her body growing weaker with each spell she cast. The clash reached its climax as Team Clint began to gain the upper hand. Clint’s “Inferno Vortex” created a swirling blaze that engulfed the golems and Mithzie’s summoned weapons. Jaype’s wind storm combined with Matthew’s water barriers created a powerful defense, pushing back Team Seven. Maui’s teleportation made him difficult to target, but Team Clint adapted quickly. Clint and Jaype used their powers to create areas of concentrated attack, forcing Maui into predictable patterns. With a final surge, Carfel used her temporal distortion to slow down Seven’s movements. “Temporal Surge!” she shouted, and time seemed to stretch. Despite the overwhelming fatigue, she held her focus, allowing Clint and his teammates to land the decisive blows. The match ended with Team Seven’s defeat. The arena returned to its normal state, the magical terrain reverting to its original form. The defeated team, exhausted and battered, faced the reality of their loss. Professor Hartley approached Team Clint with approval. “Well done, Team Clint. You’ve shown great skill and teamwork. Team Seven will now complete their 100 laps.” Carfel, though victorious, felt a deep sense of exhaustion. Her newfound ability to control time had taken a toll on her body, and she struggled to stand. She kept her mind-reading power a secret, unsure of how it would impact her relationships with her team and the university. As the day concluded, Carfel and her team celebrated their hard-earned victory. Carfel’s excitement was tempered by her fatigue and the secret she carried. She knew that her journey at The Lost Universities was just beginning and that she had much to learn and improve. The road ahead was filled with challenges, but Carfel was resolved to face them with resilience. Each victory and defeat would contribute to her growth, and she was determined to navigate the complexities of her powers and her relationships with her teammates.
