Chapter 2: Initial Impressions

665 Words
The first week at The Lost Universities was a whirlwind of new experiences for Carfel. She was settling into her routine, attending lectures, and navigating the sprawling campus with a sense of wonder and excitement. The grandeur of the university, with its ancient architecture and hidden corners, was everything she had dreamed of and more. However, her integration into Class A was not without its challenges. Carfel had quickly noticed that while most of her classmates were welcoming, a small group seemed to view her with thinly veiled disdain. This group included Clint, Mark, Jaype, and Matthew, who had been inseparable friends since their first year. The group had initially seen Carfel’s acceptance into Class A with skepticism. They had worked hard to earn their place and had always been part of a tightly-knit circle of exceptional students. Carfel, with her ordinary background and apparent lack of extraordinary qualities, seemed to them an anomaly—someone who had somehow slipped through the cracks of their expectations. One crisp autumn afternoon, Carfel was studying in a quiet corner of the library when Clint and his friends approached. They had been discussing Carfel in hushed tones, their curiosity tinged with disapproval. Clint, who was usually the most vocal of the group, decided to confront her. “Hey, Carfel,” Clint said, his tone casual but edged with a hint of challenge. “How are you finding things so far?” Carfel looked up from her book, her expression neutral. “It’s been great. The campus is incredible, and the courses are fascinating. I’m really enjoying my time here.” “That’s good to hear,” Mark added, though his tone was less warm. “We just wanted to check in and see how you’re settling in.” Carfel sensed the underlying tension but chose to respond with calm confidence. “I appreciate that. I’m finding my way around just fine.” Jaype and Matthew exchanged glances, their skepticism apparent. “It must be nice to have everything handed to you,” Jaype remarked, his voice laced with subtle derision. “Some of us had to work hard to get here.” Carfel’s eyes met Jaype’s with a steady gaze. “I worked hard for this opportunity, just like everyone else. I’m here to learn and make the most of my time at The Lost Universities.” Matthew snorted, clearly unimpressed. “We’ll see how long that enthusiasm lasts. This place has a way of testing people.” Carfel shrugged off their comments, her demeanor unruffled. “I’m not here to impress anyone. I’m here for myself and my own goals.” Clint and his friends were taken aback by Carfel’s unshakable confidence. They had expected her to be intimidated or defensive, but instead, she remained calm and composed. Her lack of concern for their opinions only seemed to deepen their curiosity and, perhaps, their unease. As the days went by, Carfel continued to focus on her studies and her newfound friends, who were more accepting and supportive. She engaged with her classes, participated in group projects, and remained unfazed by the cool reception from Clint and his friends. Carfel’s resilience and determination did not go unnoticed. Though Clint and his friends continued to watch from the sidelines, they couldn’t deny that Carfel was making her mark. Her presence was a constant reminder that The Lost Universities were a place of hidden potential and that not everything was as it seemed. Meanwhile, Carfel’s interactions with her new classmates revealed more about the university’s unique culture. She began to sense that there were deeper layers to the institution, layers that extended beyond academic achievement and into the realm of ancient secrets and untapped power. As Carfel navigated her way through the complexities of university life, she remained steadfast in her purpose. The initial challenges she faced only strengthened her resolve, and she continued to embrace the mysteries of The Lost Universities with an open heart and an unyielding spirit.
