Episode 16: The Hidden Room The rain had not stopped. For almost three hours, heavy drops had battered the windows of the mansion, turning the world outside into a dark blur. Thunder rolled across the sky, shaking the walls of the enormous house. Daniel stood beside the upstairs window, staring into the darkness. Something was wrong. He could feel it. Ever since he had returned to the mansion, strange things had been happening. First, someone had entered his private office. Then he had discovered the photograph hidden inside the old drawer. And now there was the message. YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND OUT. Daniel read the words again on his phone. His fingers tightened around the device. Someone knew what he had discovered. But who? His father had been dead for six years. His business partner, Victor, had disappeared two weeks ago. And the only person who seemed to know the truth was Elena. Daniel turned away from the window. He needed answers. He walked down the hallway toward his father's old study. The room had remained untouched since his father's death. Daniel rarely entered it because every object inside reminded him of the man he had spent years trying to understand. He pushed open the heavy wooden door. The room smelled of old books and dust. Daniel switched on the lamp. Everything looked exactly as he remembered. The large desk. The leather chair. The bookshelves. The painting of the family. He walked toward the desk and opened the drawer where he had discovered the photograph. Empty. Daniel frowned. He pulled the drawer completely out. Nothing. Then he noticed something. A small scratch on the wooden panel behind the drawer. He ran his fingers over it. The panel moved. Daniel froze. He pushed harder. A section of the wall clicked. Suddenly, part of the bookshelf moved backward. Daniel stepped away in shock. Behind the bookshelf was a narrow doorway. A secret room. His father's secret room. Daniel's heart began pounding. He pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight. Slowly, he stepped inside. The room was small and windowless. Dust covered everything, but there was something strange about the place. Someone had been there recently. A chair stood in the center of the room. A glass of water sat on a table beside it. The water was fresh. Daniel's breathing became heavier. "Someone is using this room." He looked around. On the wall were several photographs. His father. Victor. Elena. And Daniel himself. Daniel stared at the photographs in disbelief. "Why am I here?" He moved closer. One photograph showed Daniel as a teenager, standing beside his father. Another showed Victor meeting with Daniel's father. But the final photograph made his blood run cold. It showed Elena entering the mansion. The photograph had been taken only three days earlier. Daniel stepped backward. Elena had told him she had never been inside the mansion before. She had lied. Suddenly, his phone vibrated. Daniel nearly dropped it. A message appeared. LEAVE THE ROOM. NOW. He stared at the screen. Another message arrived. THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS ALREADY INSIDE THE HOUSE. Daniel looked toward the doorway. Silence. Then he heard footsteps. Slow footsteps. Coming down the hallway. Daniel quickly turned off his flashlight. He moved behind a tall cabinet and held his breath. The footsteps stopped outside the study. The door opened. Someone entered. Daniel could see only the person's shadow. The figure walked toward the desk. Daniel watched silently. Then the person spoke. "You should have stayed away, Daniel." Daniel recognized the voice. His eyes widened. It was Victor. Daniel stepped out from behind the cabinet. "Victor?" Victor turned. For several seconds, neither man spoke. Victor looked completely different from the last time Daniel had seen him. His expensive suit was gone. His face was bruised, and there was a deep cut above his left eyebrow. "You are alive," Daniel whispered. Victor gave a bitter smile. "Unfortunately." Daniel moved toward him. "Where have you been?" "Running." "From who?" Victor looked toward the secret doorway. "From the people who killed your father." Daniel froze. "My father wasn't killed in an accident?" Victor shook his head. "No." The room suddenly seemed colder. Daniel remembered the official report. His father had supposedly died when his car crashed on a mountain road. "Who killed him?" Victor hesitated. "They aren't ordinary criminals." "Then who are they?" Victor looked directly into Daniel's eyes. "They are people who control companies, politicians, banks and even the police." Daniel's face hardened. "Why would they kill my father?" "Because he discovered what they were doing." "What were they doing?" Victor walked toward the secret wall. "Your father built his empire legally. But years ago, he discovered that some of the biggest companies in the country were secretly moving billions of dollars through fake businesses." Daniel stared at him. "Money laundering?" "Much bigger than that." Victor lowered his voice. "They were buying governments." Daniel felt a chill run through his body. Victor continued. "Your father found evidence. He wanted to expose them." "What happened?" "They found out." Daniel looked at the photographs again. "And you?" Victor's eyes became filled with guilt. "I helped your father." "Then why did you disappear?" "Because I was afraid." Daniel stepped closer. "You left me alone." "I know." "You watched me struggle for years while you hid." "I know." Daniel's anger grew. "You could have told me!" Victor suddenly grabbed Daniel's arm. "Listen to me! If I had told you, you would be dead." Daniel pulled his arm away. "Then tell me everything now." Victor looked toward the secret room. "Your father left something for you." "What?" "A recording." Daniel's eyes widened. "Where?" Victor walked to the desk. He opened a hidden compartment beneath it. Inside was a small black device. Victor handed it to Daniel. "Your father recorded this before he died." Daniel stared at the device. His hands trembled. He pressed the button. Static filled the room. Then his father's voice came through. "Daniel, if you are hearing this, it means I am dead." Daniel stopped breathing. His father's voice continued. "I don't know who will find this recording. But there is one thing you must understand." A pause. "Never trust anyone completely." Daniel looked at Victor. The recording continued. "The people responsible for my death are closer to you than you think." Daniel's eyes widened. "One of them is someone you have known for many years." Victor looked uncomfortable. Daniel stopped the recording. "Who is it?" Victor said nothing. "Who?" Before Victor could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs. Both men turned toward the door. Someone had entered the mansion. Victor immediately pulled Daniel toward the secret room. "Come with me." Daniel resisted. "Who is downstairs?" Victor whispered. "They found us." A second crash echoed through the mansion. Then came the sound of footsteps. Several people. Victor closed the secret door. They stood in darkness. Daniel's heart pounded. "How do we get out?" "There is another exit." Victor moved to the back wall and pressed a hidden button. A narrow passage opened. Daniel stared at him. "How many secret rooms did my father have?" "More than you know." They entered the passage. Behind them, the study door suddenly burst open. Voices echoed through the room. "Search everywhere!" "They must be here!" Daniel and Victor moved deeper into the tunnel. The passage was narrow and cold. After several minutes, they reached a metal door. Victor unlocked it. They emerged inside an abandoned storage building behind the mansion. Rain poured down outside. Daniel turned toward the mansion. Several black vehicles were parked in front. Men dressed in dark clothing were searching the property. "Who are they?" Daniel asked. Victor shook his head. "You don't want to know." Daniel looked at the black device in his hand. "Yes, I do." Victor stared at him. Daniel's voice became firm. "My father spent his entire life building that company. Someone killed him, destroyed my family, and has been watching me ever since." He looked at Victor. "I'm done running." Victor sighed. "Then you need to know the final truth." Daniel waited. Victor's expression changed. "The person behind everything isn't some stranger." "Who?" Victor looked at him. "It's someone who has been beside you since the beginning." Daniel's phone vibrated. A new message appeared. ASK VICTOR WHY HE NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT YOUR BROTHER. Daniel's face went pale. "My brother?" Victor suddenly looked terrified. "Daniel..." "You told me I was an only child." Victor said nothing. Daniel grabbed his jacket. "Who is my brother?" Victor looked toward the dark road. Then he whispered: "He's alive." Daniel's heart stopped. "Where is he?" Victor looked directly at him. "He's the billionaire who owns the company trying to destroy yours." Daniel stared at him in disbelief. Thunder exploded across the sky. And for the first time, Daniel realized that the war he had been fighting was not between strangers. It was a war within his own family.
