THE BILLIONAIRE Episode 8: The Hidden Vault The hospital corridor was silent. Daniel Blackwood stood outside the emergency room, staring through the glass window at David Carter. Machines surrounded the old man. A heart monitor beeped steadily beside his bed. David had survived the shooting, but the doctors had warned Daniel that his condition was critical. Daniel clenched his fists. Everything had changed in a matter of days. His mother was alive. His brother Thomas had returned. Marcus Kane, the man Daniel believed was dead, had disappeared. Victor Hale was hunting them. And now David Carter had nearly been murdered because of a golden key. Daniel reached into his coat and touched it. The key was cold. But something about it made his skin crawl. Detective Sarah Morgan walked toward him. "Daniel." He turned. "What did you find?" Sarah looked around before answering. "Two police officers outside your office were attacked." Daniel's expression hardened. "By Victor's men?" "We don't know yet." Sarah lowered her voice. "But there's something else." "What?" "The bullet removed from David's body came from a weapon that was used in another murder twelve years ago." Daniel stared at her. "Whose murder?" Sarah hesitated. "Your father's." Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. "My father?" Sarah nodded. "The case was never solved. But the ballistics report matches." Daniel stepped backward. "My father died eighteen years ago." "I know." "Then how could the same weapon have been used twelve years ago?" Sarah looked directly into his eyes. "Because your father's death may not have happened the way you were told." Daniel said nothing. For years, he had believed his father had died in a business accident. That story had been repeated so many times that it had become a fact in his mind. But now everything was beginning to unravel. "Sarah," Daniel whispered, "what are you saying?" "I'm saying someone may have murdered your father." Daniel looked through the glass at David. "And David knows who." Sarah nodded. "That's what I think." Suddenly, a nurse rushed out of the emergency room. "Mr. Blackwood!" Daniel immediately turned. "What's wrong?" "Your friend is awake." Daniel hurried inside. David's eyes slowly opened. Daniel moved beside the bed. "David." David looked at him weakly. "You came." "Of course I came." David's eyes moved toward Sarah. "She knows?" Sarah stepped closer. "Tell us everything." David swallowed painfully. "The key..." Daniel pulled it from his pocket. "This?" David's eyes widened. "Yes." "What does it open?" David looked toward the door. "Not what..." He coughed. "Who." Daniel frowned. "What does that mean?" David's breathing became heavier. "Your father didn't leave you that key to make you rich." Daniel stared at him. "I was already rich." David shook his head. "Your father knew everything would be taken from you." Daniel's face tightened. "What would be taken from me?" "Your company." Daniel froze. David continued. "Your name." He paused. "Your family." Daniel looked at Sarah. David whispered the final words. "Even your life." The heart monitor suddenly began beeping faster. A doctor rushed into the room. "Everyone out!" Daniel stepped backward as nurses surrounded David. Sarah grabbed his arm. "We need to leave." "Why?" "Because if Victor Hale knows David is awake, he'll come for him." Daniel looked at David one last time. Then he noticed something. David's right hand was clenched tightly. A small piece of paper was visible between his fingers. Daniel moved closer. He quickly pulled it free. The doctor shouted at him to leave. Daniel and Sarah rushed into the corridor. "What is it?" Sarah asked. Daniel unfolded the paper. There were only six words written on it. MIDNIGHT. BLACKWOOD TOWER. FLOOR 49. Sarah stared at it. "Your tower only has forty-eight floors." Daniel looked at her. "I know." --- BLACKWOOD TOWER Two hours later, Daniel stood inside his private office. Thomas entered carrying a handgun. "You're going somewhere." Daniel looked at him. "Yes." "Where?" "Blackwood Tower." Thomas frowned. "That's where Victor will expect you to go." "I know." Thomas stepped closer. "Then you're walking into a trap." Daniel turned toward the window. "Maybe." Their mother entered the room. She looked worried. "You found the message." Daniel nodded. "How did you know?" She looked at the golden key. "Because your father showed me that key before he died." Daniel turned sharply. "You knew about it?" His mother's eyes filled with regret. "I knew your father was hiding something." "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because I wanted you to live." Daniel's voice became angry. "You let me believe you were dead for twenty years!" "I had no choice." Thomas stepped between them. "Daniel, listen to her." Daniel looked at his brother. "You knew too?" Thomas shook his head. "Not everything." Their mother walked toward Daniel. "Your father discovered that Victor Hale was stealing from the Blackwood empire." Daniel's eyes narrowed. "Victor worked for my father?" "He was one of his most trusted advisers." "Then why didn't Dad expose him?" "Because Victor wasn't working alone." Daniel became silent. "Who was with him?" His mother looked toward the door. "Someone inside your family." The room went silent. Daniel felt his heartbeat increase. "Who?" Before she could answer, the lights went out. Thomas immediately raised his weapon. A gunshot exploded through the darkness. The window shattered. Daniel dropped to the floor. "Get down!" Thomas fired toward the direction of the shot. Their mother screamed. Emergency lights came on. Daniel looked around. Nobody had been hit. But the golden key was gone. Daniel searched his pocket. Empty. "No." Thomas looked at him. "What?" "The key." Their mother's face became pale. "They took it." Daniel ran toward the broken window. Far below, headlights disappeared into the night. Someone had escaped. --- FLOOR 49 At midnight, Daniel returned to Blackwood Tower. But this time, he came prepared. Thomas stayed downstairs with their mother while Sarah joined Daniel. They stood inside the elevator. Sarah pressed the button for the top floor. The elevator stopped at forty-eight. Daniel looked at the golden key's outline in his hand. He had secretly made a copy before the thief took the original. He inserted the copy into a small slot hidden beneath the elevator control panel. Nothing happened. Then there was a deep mechanical sound. The elevator moved upward. Sarah stared at the floor display. "Forty-nine." The doors opened. A dark hallway stretched before them. There were no offices. No furniture. No cameras. Only a single black door at the end. Daniel approached it. Sarah raised her gun. "Careful." Daniel opened the door. Inside was a huge underground-style vault hidden above the building. Shelves were filled with documents. Photographs covered the walls. Bank records. Contracts. Newspaper articles. And pictures of Victor Hale. Daniel walked slowly through the room. Then he stopped. A photograph showed his father standing beside Victor. But there was another man in the picture. Daniel recognized him immediately. He dropped the photograph. "That's impossible." Sarah picked it up. "Who is he?" Daniel stared at the photograph. "My uncle." Sarah's eyes widened. "Your father's brother?" Daniel nodded. "He died fifteen years ago." Sarah looked at the photograph again. "Apparently not." Daniel continued searching. Then he found a file marked: PROJECT BLACK CROWN He opened it. Inside was a list of names. Victor Hale. Daniel's uncle. Marcus Kane. David Carter. And finally... Daniel Blackwood. Daniel's hands began shaking. "What is Black Crown?" Sarah asked. Daniel turned the page. A sentence had been written across the top. THE HEIR MUST NEVER DISCOVER THE TRUTH. Suddenly, they heard footsteps behind them. Daniel turned. A man stood in the doorway. He was dressed in a black suit. His face was older, scarred, but strangely familiar. Sarah raised her gun. "Don't move!" The man smiled. Daniel stared at him. He knew that face. It was the face from his childhood memories. His father's brother. The man everyone believed was dead. The man slowly raised his hands. "Daniel." Daniel's voice trembled. "Uncle Richard?" Richard smiled. "Your father should have told you about me." Daniel tightened his fists. "Where is the key?" Richard's smile disappeared. "Victor has it." "Where is Victor?" Richard stepped into the vault. "He's coming for you." Suddenly, the building shook. A massive explosion erupted somewhere below. The lights flickered. Sarah grabbed Daniel. "Someone's attacking the building!" Richard looked toward the ceiling. "They're here." Daniel stared at him. "Who?" Richard looked directly into his eyes. "The people who have been controlling your family for eighteen years." Another explosion shook the tower. Glass rained down the hallway. Richard pointed toward a hidden passage behind the vault. "There's only one way out." Daniel looked at Sarah. Then at Richard. He knew he had no choice. He followed them into the darkness. Behind them, flames began spreading through Blackwood Tower. And somewhere in the burning building, Victor Hale stood holding the golden key. For the first time, he smiled. Because the final part of his plan had begun.
