30 Before moving forward, Traynor looked down at the floor, looking for anything that might make a noise and give him away if he stepped on it. The floor was made of timber, a series of tongue-and-groove boards running lengthways along the hallway, locked together, and nailed to timber joists beneath the house. The floorboards were old, probably been there since the house was built, he thought. They would creak in places where age had warped them and the nails had gradually loosened over time. Jack moved forward slowly. This is where his military training once again came to the fore. As he moved, he placed each foot down on its outer edge and then slowly rolled the foot flat so his weight pressed down on the floor in gradual increments.
