40 Following some distance behind the bike riders and closing fast, Cameron Barker saw the brake lights on the two motor cycles ahead suddenly glow brighter. He braked hard and the vehicle skidded, fish-tailing to a stop. “What are they doing?” he said, leaning forward over the steering wheel and peering out through the windscreen. “They’ve stopped,” Sam said from the rear seat. “Yeah, but why?” Barker asked. “They’ve obviously seen the lights at the road block up ahead,” Sam suggested. “That will be Fowler and Rooney,” Foley said. “Do I dare suggest we have the bastards?” Barker asked. “Somehow, I don’t think it will be that easy,” Foley answered. “I’ll move up closer.” Barker took his foot off the brake and the car began to roll slowly forward.
