THE FIRST CRACK

Adien’s POV The office was more quite at night, which was usually when he did his best thinking, or worst. He has been reviewing the document of the ongoing project that is handled by miss Miles, and he can’t seem to find any mistake. She did it just the same way he would have done it, which is quite surprising. He had reviewed more than a hundred project submission in three years, and always found something to correct in every single one of them, but this particular file from miss Miles was the first exception, just perfect that he doesn’t know what to do with it. He sighed, then suddenly remembered what happened earlier today between miss Miles and Diana. This was the first time in a long time, he met someone who could put Diana in her place. He knew the kind of person Diana was, really cruel and calculative. Obviously, she wanted to get a reaction from Rose, but who would have thought that Rose would turn things around with ease, shocking both of them, especially Diana, she really didn’t expect it, it was almost funny. For some reasons, he refused to intervene, not because he was scared of Diana’s reaction, but because he wanted to see what miss Miles had up her sleeves, and he was satisfied with the result. There was something about miss Miles that just unsettles him whenever he thinks about her, and his wolf makes everything more suspicious. The way his wolf always react to her natural scent, even when she’s around him, he just feels so different in a kind of way that he can’t even explain. ‘Why is that though?’ ‘Is this an after effect of rejecting my mate?’ FLASHBACK On the day of the mating ceremony, few hours before the ceremony. Adien was standing on the balcony, dressed for his mating ceremony. It was supposed to be a joyful day with his mate, according to tradition, they were supposed to be together right now, but deep down, he hope his mate wouldn’t come. His eyes kept scanning the hall and surroundings hoping to get a glimpse of someone, but unfortunately for him, or for both of them, what was meant to happen, can’t be stopped and he knew it. Elder Lucian came and patted his shoulder from behind, like a way of consoling him, but the words that followed sounded like a final push. “You’re doing the right thing. She’s unsuitable for leadership” FAST FORWARD TO THE CEREMONY, AFTER THE REJECTION I watched her as the light left her eyes, that flicker of hope left her eyes. She walked slowly to the cup of ceremonial wine, which was supposed to be taken with our hands intertwined, but she held it tightly in her hands. I saw how she held the cup like it suddenly became heavy, and then she drank it in one glop. I watched her. I couldn’t take my eyes off her, it was like I was under her spell. She didn’t cry, she didn’t beg, she didn’t ask why. She just turned around and walked out of the hall without turning back, and at that moment, for the first in a long while, I was uncertain, and unsure if I had truly made the right decision ‘yes I made the right decision, right?’ END OF FLASHBACK “I definitely did the right thing, it was necessary. It was the right decision” Adien sighed heavily, placing his head on the table. “ What the hell is happening now” He picked up his phone to call Jarren, his beta. They have not been on talking terms ever since that mating ceremony. Jarren had not been in support of him rejecting his mate, he said it was cruel to both of them, that he was going to hurt himself and his mate. ‘Jarren has been the only one who saw me as a friend and not an alpha, but recently, I feel like I have disappointed him. Though, I have been trying to get him to talk to him, first because he has no choice, since I’m his alpha, he will eventually talk to me. Second, because I didn’t want to loose the friendship we had, I didn’t want to be alone again’. After calling, he picked the call on the second ring, “What is it?” ‘What nasty behavior’ “Can you help me do a background check on someone?” “Who?” “Rose Miles” There was a pause in the background, making me think the line was disconnected. ‘Why did he suddenly go quite’ “Hello?” “Who is she?” “Oh… she is an employee, newly employed” “ Ok. I’ll see what I can find” “Hmm.. Thank you” “Still at work?” “About to round up, I’ll leave soon” “Want me to come pick you up?” I chuckled softly. ‘He’s always acting cold, but obviously still cared’ “No it’s fine, thanks anyways” “Hmmm… see you then” “Bye” then the line was dead I need to know why I’m feeling this way, why my wolf acts in a certain way when she’s around, and I can only do that if I know who she really is. Or maybe I might just be over reacting, and this is just the after effect of the rejection. I remember seeing her this morning, she just greeted me and walked pass me, and for about five minutes or more I kept staring at her, so intensively that for a second, I could swear that I saw my ex mate. I watched her steps, her back, her posture. It was the same, everything was just so identical, I almost went after her, if Corner hadn’t called me, it was like I was pulled out from an illusion. I couldn’t understand what was going on, ‘Was it her? Or It was just me over thinking everything to the extent that I am now hallucinating?’ I checked the time, and it was already late. So I packed the files carefully ready to leave. "I told myself the unsettled feeling would pass by morning. It did not."
