“Even ruder,” Lencia replied, “when they ask us when they can see us again and we will not give them an address.” Alice must have seen the wisdom of this because she did not say anything more. Lencia hurried back to her own bedroom. The housekeeper was there and she expressed surprise that they had to leave in such a hurry. As one of the maids started to pack Lencia’s clothes, a message was sent to the stables to provide them with a carriage. As was usual for the Duc’s guests, another servant was sent to the Railway Station and he would notify the Stationmaster that they would require a private carriage.
