Chapter Six
As soon as Mrs. Nathaniel's car disappeared down the road, another luxurious car pulled up in front of Esther's grandparents' house.
Esther frowned in surprise.
Another visitor?
For a brief moment, she hoped it was another kind-hearted guest like Mrs. Nathaniel.
Curious, she hurried outside.
The smile on her face disappeared instantly.
Standing beside the car were her father, her stepmother, and Jennifer.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Painful memories from her previous life flashed through her mind—years of insults, loneliness, betrayal, and endless suffering.
Her expression turned cold.
Before she could say a word, Mrs. David rushed forward and wrapped her in a tight embrace.
"My dear Esther! We've missed you so much."
Esther stood frozen in disbelief.
Missed me?
In her previous life, this same woman had treated her worse than a servant.
Without saying a word, Esther gently removed her hands and walked toward the house.
Mrs. David quickly followed her.
"Esther," she called loudly, making sure everyone could hear, "even if you're upset with us, you should still respect your elders. That's how cultured people behave in the city."
Esther slowly turned around.
"You don't need to teach me how to live," she replied calmly. "I treat people the same way they treat me. Besides... I have no interest in living in the city."
The atmosphere suddenly became tense.
Before Mrs. David could respond, Esther's grandmother stepped forward.
"My granddaughter is well-mannered," she said firmly. "Everyone in this village loves her."
Jennifer immediately interrupted with a sweet smile.
"Please don't misunderstand my mother, Esther. She only wants what's best for you."
Her gentle voice sounded convincing, but Esther could easily see through the fake concern.
She looked at the three of them and sighed.
"What do you really want?"
Mr. David stepped forward.
"I've come to take you to the city," he said gently. "I want you to continue your education there and live with us."
Esther lowered her head.
Perfect...
She still needed to retrieve the important documents her mother had left behind before they could be destroyed.
She looked up again.
"I'll agree... but only on one condition."
Jennifer's smile faded immediately.
"What condition?" she asked anxiously.
"I won't leave today," Esther replied confidently. "I'll come on my own when I'm ready."
She paused before continuing.
"And when I arrive, I will have my own room. Two maids will attend to me. No one is allowed to enter my room without my permission. We will live under the same roof, but as strangers. No unnecessary conversations. No pretending we're one happy family."
Silence filled the compound.
Mr. David stared at her in shock.
He had never expected Esther to make such bold demands.
But his company's future meant more to him than anything else.
After a long pause, he nodded.
"Very well. I accept your conditions."
A satisfied smile appeared on Esther's face.
Without another word, Mr. David, Mrs. David, and Jennifer returned to their car and drove away.
As the dust settled, Esther let out a bitter laugh.
How foolish I was in my previous life...
A selfish father.
A cruel stepmother.
A jealous stepsister.
How had her late mother ever fallen in love with such a man?
Turning to her grandmother, Esther forced a small smile.
"I'll be back soon."
Her grandmother looked at her worriedly.
Whenever Esther felt overwhelmed, she always escaped into the forest to clear her mind.
"I just want my granddaughter to find true happiness someday," the old woman whispered.
---
The cool breeze brushed against Esther's face as she ran through the quiet forest.
Running had always been her escape.
It helped her forget the pain, even if only for a little while.
After a few minutes, she heard another pair of footsteps behind her.
She glanced back.
A tall, handsome young man was running a short distance behind her.
Startled, Esther increased her pace.
To her surprise, the stranger effortlessly caught up with her and soon ran ahead of her.
Breathing heavily, Esther finally stopped beside a wooden bench.
She sat down, exhausted, trying to catch her breath.
"I should have brought some water," she muttered.
Just then, a bottle of water appeared in front of her.
She looked up in surprise.
It was the same handsome young man.
Too thirsty to think, she quickly opened the bottle and drank.
She drank so fast that she suddenly began coughing.
"Easy," the young man said with a faint smile. "Are you alright?"
Esther looked into his eyes for the first time.
For a strange reason, they felt... familiar.
"I'm fine," she whispered.
But before she could say another word, everything around her began to spin.
Her vision blurred.
The last thing she saw was the handsome stranger rushing toward her as darkness completely swallowed her.
