Chapter Four
Bang!
Ronald slammed his fist hard against the polished mahogany table. The loud sound echoed throughout his luxurious office, making everyone outside freeze in fear.
His icy eyes remained fixed on the document lying before him. The veins on his forehead bulged with anger as he slowly lifted his gaze to his personal assistant, Andrew.
The office was silent despite the cool air from the air conditioner. Andrew stood motionless, his hands trembling uncontrollably. Sweat rolled down his forehead as he struggled to meet Ronald's terrifying gaze.
"What is this?" Ronald asked in a dangerously calm voice.
Andrew swallowed hard but couldn't say a word.
"I gave you one simple assignment." Ronald rose from his chair, his expensive leather shoes clicking against the marble floor. "One simple task! Yet you failed miserably."
He grabbed the document and threw it at Andrew's chest.
"If not for the friendship between us..." Ronald growled, "...I would have buried you alive for this mistake."
Andrew lowered his head without saying a word. He knew Ronald wasn't simply angry. Something else was bothering him.
Suddenly—
Ronald staggered backward.
His face twisted in pain as he grabbed his chest tightly. His breathing became heavy, and beads of sweat instantly formed on his forehead.
"Boss!"
Andrew rushed forward and caught him before he collapsed.
"Are you alright?" he asked anxiously. "Didn't you take your medicine this morning? Why do you keep pushing yourself? You know excessive anger only makes your condition worse!"
Ronald couldn't answer.
His entire body trembled violently.
With shaking hands, he reached into his pocket, brought out a small bottle of medicine, and quickly swallowed two tablets. He leaned weakly against the bed in his private office, breathing heavily as though every breath was a painful battle.
Andrew gently supported him until his breathing slowly became normal.
Seeing the once-feared Mafia Lord reduced to such a helpless state broke Andrew's heart.
He sighed deeply.
No one knew the truth behind Ronald's mysterious illness.
Immediately after his father's death, Ronald had been poisoned during the battle to inherit the Mafia throne. The poison wasn't ordinary—it was a rare and deadly substance that slowly destroyed his body from the inside.
The cruelest part was that the person responsible wasn't an enemy...
It was his late father's closest friend.
From that day onward, Ronald stopped trusting people.
The cheerful young man he once was disappeared forever, replaced by a cold, ruthless, and emotionless Mafia Lord feared by everyone.
People saw him as heartless.
They didn't know that beneath his cold expression was a lonely man fighting a painful battle every single day.
The medicine only kept him alive.
Without it, he would lose control of himself completely, as though he were losing his mind.
Andrew looked at his boss with tears gathering in his eyes.
"I truly hope," he whispered softly, "that one day you'll find the cure to this strange poison before the whole underworld discovers your weakness."
Ronald slowly closed his eyes.
For the first time that day, a single tear escaped from the corner of his eye.
He quickly wiped it away before Andrew could notice.
A Mafia Lord was never allowed to cry.
