Chapter Ten
The mansion was unusually quiet.
Unlike the grand weddings people dreamed of, this one was simple.
Only a few people were present because Ronald had refused to allow a lavish ceremony.
There were no colorful decorations, no cheerful music, and no excited guests.
Instead, silence filled the living room.
Mr. David, Mrs. David, and Jennifer sat together, stealing nervous glances at Ronald, who looked as though he wanted to be anywhere else.
Andrew stood quietly behind his boss.
"Please let today end peacefully," he prayed silently.
The only person smiling was Mrs. Nathaniel.
She sat comfortably on the sofa, her face glowing with happiness as she patiently waited for her future daughter-in-law.
Ronald glanced at his expensive wristwatch for what felt like the tenth time.
His fingers tapped impatiently against the arm of the chair.
"Where is the bride?" he asked coldly.
"I have an important meeting to attend."
His voice echoed through the silent room.
Mr. David immediately stood up.
"S-She'll be here very soon, Mr. Ronald."
Mrs. Nathaniel chuckled softly.
"My son," she said teasingly, "why are you in such a hurry? A bride deserves time to look beautiful for her groom."
Andrew quickly lowered his head to hide his smile.
Even in such a tense atmosphere, Madam still found a way to joke.
---
Upstairs...
Esther stood silently in front of the large mirror.
The two maids carefully adjusted the final folds of her beautiful princess-style gown.
One of them smiled warmly.
"Miss Esther, you look absolutely beautiful."
The other nodded in agreement.
"Any man would be lucky to marry you."
Esther stared at her reflection.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
The girl looking back at her seemed confident...
But inside, her heart was heavy.
"Last life... I walked into my future without knowing the truth."
"This time..."
"I know exactly what I'm walking into."
She slowly closed her eyes.
"This marriage will not decide my destiny."
"I will."
Taking a deep breath, she opened her eyes again.
"I'm ready."
---
Soft footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Everyone instinctively turned around.
Step...
Step...
Step...
The room fell completely silent.
Esther slowly descended the staircase in her elegant gown.
She looked breathtaking.
Even the servants couldn't hide their admiration.
Jennifer's smile disappeared.
How can she be this beautiful? she thought bitterly.
Feeling everyone's eyes on her, Esther lowered her gaze shyly.
As she reached the final step...
She looked up.
Her eyes met Ronald's.
Both of them froze.
For several seconds...
Neither of them spoke.
Then Ronald's eyes widened.
Esther blinked in disbelief.
Both of them pointed at each other.
"You?"
"What?"
"You're the bride?"
"You're the groom?"
They shouted together.
"I'll never marry you!"
The entire room became silent.
Andrew covered his mouth to stop himself from laughing.
Mrs. Nathaniel suddenly clapped her hands excitedly.
"Oh my!"
"So you two already know each other!"
She laughed happily.
"I haven't even introduced you, yet you're already talking together."
She looked at everyone proudly.
"See? Even your hearts are in agreement. You both spoke at exactly the same time."
"Mum..."
Ronald groaned in frustration.
"We can't get married."
Esther nodded immediately.
"He's right."
Mrs. Nathaniel simply smiled.
"I'm afraid it's too late."
She gently held Esther's hand.
"The marriage registrar is already here."
She winked playfully.
"You can argue after you're husband and wife."
Ronald and Esther looked at each other helplessly.
Neither of them had expected fate to play such a cruel joke.
---
A few minutes later...
The marriage documents were placed before them.
Esther stared at the pen.
Her fingers trembled slightly.
She remembered her grandparents.
She remembered her mother's company.
She remembered Mr. David's threat.
Slowly...
She signed her name.
Ronald barely looked at the papers.
He picked up the pen and signed without hesitation.
The ceremony was over.
They were now husband and wife.
---
Mr. David hugged Esther tightly.
His eyes looked moist.
"Take good care of yourself."
Mrs. David gently held Esther's hands.
"We'll miss you so much."
Jennifer forced a smile.
"Visit us often."
Esther quietly looked at each of them.
"Wonderful actors..." she thought.
"If I didn't know the truth, I might actually believe you."
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
Standing nearby, Ronald noticed it.
"Strange..."
"Why isn't she crying?"
"Why does she look relieved to leave her own family?"
For the first time...
He realized there was far more to Esther than met the eye.
---
Inside the car...
Silence filled the air.
Ronald sat on one side, working on his laptop.
Esther deliberately sat near the window, watching the city pass by.
Neither of them spoke.
Five minutes passed.
Ten minutes.
The silence became almost unbearable.
Andrew glanced at them through the rearview mirror.
"These two are unbelievably stubborn."
Finally...
Ronald closed his laptop.
"When we get home..."
"There are rules you must follow."
His tone was calm but commanding.
Esther folded her arms.
"You don't have to speak to me as though I forced you into this marriage."
She looked directly at him.
"I never wanted this marriage either."
Ronald remained silent.
Without another word, he reopened his laptop.
His indifference annoyed Esther.
She punched the seat lightly in frustration.
Andrew smiled to himself.
"At this rate..."
"I just hope these two don't start World War Three before we even reach home."
To be continued…
