Chapter Eleven: The Woman Who Knew Too Much The hospital corridor was silent. Amara sat outside Mama Grace's room with her hands clasped tightly together. She had not slept. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but she refused to leave. Ethan sat beside her. Neither of them spoke for several minutes. Finally, Amara whispered, "What if she doesn't wake up?" Ethan looked at her. "She will." "You don't know that." "No," he admitted. "I don't." He took her hand. "But I'll be here when she does." Amara leaned against his shoulder. For a moment, the world felt quiet. Then a doctor approached. "Amara?" She immediately stood. "Yes?" "Your grandmother is stable. We're monitoring her closely." "Can I see her?" "For a few minutes." Amara entered the room. Mama Grace lay motionless beneath the white sheets, surrounded by machines. Amara sat beside her and gently held her hand. "Grandma..." Her voice broke. "You promised you'd always be here." A tear slipped down her cheek. "I still have so many questions." She leaned closer. "Please wake up." Mama Grace's fingers suddenly moved. Amara froze. "Grandma?" Nothing. Then, very faintly, Mama Grace whispered a name. "Richard..." Amara's heart began pounding. "Richard who?" Mama Grace's eyes remained closed. "Richard Cole..." Then she became still again. Amara stared at her in disbelief. --- Outside the room, Ethan was speaking with Daniel. "I know Vanessa was involved," Ethan said. Daniel looked at him carefully. "You have no proof." "I don't need proof to know she's dangerous." Daniel lowered his voice. "You should be careful." "Why?" "Because Vanessa isn't the only person you should be worried about." Ethan frowned. "What does that mean?" Daniel glanced toward the hospital room. "Your father knows more about Amara's parents than he's telling you." Ethan stepped closer. "How much more?" Daniel hesitated. "Enough to destroy this family." Before Ethan could ask another question, Daniel walked away. --- That night, Ethan confronted his father. Richard was sitting alone in his study. "You knew Amara's parents." Richard didn't answer. "You knew they were in danger." Silence. "And you knew their deaths weren't an accident." Richard finally looked up. "Who told you?" "Does it matter?" "It matters because some truths can destroy people." Ethan slammed the old file onto the desk. "You've been lying to me my entire life." Richard's eyes filled with regret. "I was trying to protect you." "From what?" "From the people who killed them." Ethan froze. "Who?" Richard looked toward the window. "I don't know." "You expect me to believe that?" "I know who ordered it." Ethan's breathing stopped. "Who?" Richard's voice dropped to a whisper. "Someone you trust." --- Meanwhile, Amara stood outside Mama Grace's room. She couldn't stop thinking about the name. Richard Cole. Why would her grandmother mention Ethan's father? She pulled out her phone and searched through the photographs Ethan had shown her. Then she noticed something. In one old photograph of her parents, there was a man standing behind them. She zoomed in. Her heart dropped. It was Richard Cole. But that wasn't the shocking part. Standing beside him was Mama Grace. And between them... Was a little boy. Ethan. Amara stared at the screen. The truth was much older than she had imagined. --- At the other end of the hospital, a woman stepped out of an elevator. She wore a nurse's uniform. She walked calmly down the corridor. But she wasn't a nurse. She stopped outside Mama Grace's room. Then she pulled out her phone. "She's still alive." A voice answered. "Then make sure she doesn't remember anything." The woman looked through the glass at Mama Grace. "I understand." She ended the call. But before she could enter the room, someone grabbed her wrist. Daniel. "I think we've met before." The woman's eyes widened. Daniel pulled off her hospital ID. "You aren't a nurse." She tried to escape. Daniel held her firmly. "Who sent you?" She remained silent. "Vanessa?" Still nothing. Daniel leaned closer. "Tell me the truth." The woman finally whispered, "Vanessa doesn't know anything." Daniel's expression changed. "Then who does?" The woman looked terrified. "The person behind everything." "Who?" She swallowed. "Richard Cole." Daniel froze. "My father?" Before she could say anything else, the lights suddenly went out. The hallway fell into darkness. A loud crash came from Mama Grace's room. Daniel turned immediately. "Amara!" He rushed toward the room. When the emergency lights came on... The woman was gone. And Mama Grace's bed was empty. Amara stood frozen in the doorway. "Where is my grandmother?" No one answered. Then Ethan arrived, breathless. He looked at the empty bed. His face went pale. Someone had taken Mama Grace. And whoever had done it had just declared war on both families. But somewhere outside the hospital, inside a speeding black car, Mama Grace slowly opened her eyes. She looked at the person sitting beside her. "You..." The stranger smiled. "Yes, Grace." "You remember me." Mama Grace's eyes widened in terror. "You should have stayed silent." The car disappeared into the night. And for the first time in twenty years, the woman who knew the entire truth was finally face-to-face with the person who had buried it.
