CHAPTER 10 : When The Rain Forgot Our Names

750 Words
Chapter Ten: The File That Changed Everything The rain had not stopped since the night Ethan and Amara confessed their love. It was as though the sky knew something neither of them did. They spent the morning together at a small café near the river, laughing over breakfast. For a few precious hours, there were no secrets, no attacks, no wealthy families, and no painful pasts. Just Ethan. Just Amara. "I wish time could stop," Amara said, watching the rain race down the café window. Ethan smiled. "If it did, I'd spend forever right here." She blushed and reached for his hand. For the first time in years, Ethan felt something he had almost forgotten. Peace. --- At the Cole Mansion... Richard Cole stood in his private office. Daniel entered carrying an old brown file tied with a faded red ribbon. "I found it." Richard looked at the file as though it were a ghost. "I should have destroyed it years ago." Daniel placed it on the desk. "But you didn't." Richard slowly untied the ribbon. Inside were newspaper clippings, photographs, police reports... ...and one letter. The letter was addressed to Richard. With trembling hands, he opened it. "Richard, if anything happens to us, protect our daughter. We trusted you like a brother. Don't let our enemies find Amara." The letter was signed by two names. David Adebayo. Sarah Adebayo. Amara's parents. Richard closed his eyes. "I failed you." --- That same afternoon... Ethan received a text from his father. Come home immediately. It's about Amara. His heart skipped a beat. Within minutes he arrived. Richard was waiting alone. "I've lied to you for twenty years." Ethan frowned. "What are you talking about?" Richard slid the file across the desk. "You deserve the truth." For the next hour... Ethan read every page. Every report. Every letter. Every photograph. When he finally looked up... His eyes were filled with disbelief. "No..." Richard nodded sadly. "It's true." "Your father..." Ethan whispered. "You were best friends with Amara's parents." "Yes." "They saved my life more than once." "Then why did you disappear after they died?" Richard couldn't answer. Instead... A single tear rolled down his face. "Because I was afraid." --- Elsewhere... Mama Grace finally told Amara everything she knew. "Your father worked as an accountant." Amara nodded. "I know." "But that wasn't all." "He discovered evidence that someone inside a powerful company was stealing millions." Amara listened silently. "When he refused to stay quiet..." Mama Grace's voice broke. "They started threatening him." "Did he tell the police?" "Yes." "But before the investigation began..." "The accident happened." Amara slowly stood. "So..." "You think they were murdered?" Mama Grace looked away. "I've believed it for twenty years." --- That evening... Ethan rushed to Amara's apartment. He needed to tell her everything. But as he reached the entrance... He froze. Police cars surrounded the building. Neighbors stood outside whispering. An ambulance was parked nearby. Ethan's heart began to race. He jumped from the car. "What happened?" One officer turned toward him. "An elderly woman collapsed." Ethan pushed through the crowd. Inside... Mama Grace lay unconscious on a stretcher. Amara held her hand tightly, tears streaming down her face. "Grandma..." "Please don't leave me." The paramedics hurried her into the ambulance. Amara climbed inside. Ethan followed. At the hospital... Doctors worked desperately. Hours passed. No one spoke. Finally... A doctor stepped into the waiting room. "I'm sorry." Amara's heart stopped. "We managed to stabilize her." "But..." "She suffered a severe stroke." "She's alive..." "...but there's no way of knowing when—or if—she'll wake up." Amara burst into tears. Ethan caught her before she fell. She buried her face in his chest, sobbing uncontrollably. "I can't lose her." "You won't face this alone," Ethan whispered. "I promise." --- Late that night... As everyone slept... A nurse quietly entered Mama Grace's room. She looked around to make sure no one was watching. Then she removed a syringe from her pocket. Just as she stepped toward the hospital bed... A voice echoed from the doorway. "Stop right there." The nurse spun around. Standing in the doorway... ...was Daniel Cole. He stared at the syringe. Then at the terrified nurse. "Who sent you?" The nurse's hands trembled. She whispered just three words. "It was..." "...Miss Vanessa." Daniel's face turned to stone. For the first time, he realized Vanessa's obsession had crossed every line. And somewhere in the darkness, a storm far more dangerous than rain had begun.
