Chapter Seven

Can I pause the universe for a minute....sorry, an hour....no...a day. I laid flat on my bed in frustration before raising the note to have a glimpse of the content once more. He's going to be at the club this evening and I had to be there. It's not like I have a choice. I raised my other arm, which revealed the dress gifted to me. The dress I am supposed to wear to the party tonight. Gosh, I wonder what my best friend would say if she were here. Right! My best friend. I forgot, Matteo said he would be sending her here, to spend the remaining days of the week with me. s**t! This is a disaster. How was I going to explain this to Steph? I thought nothing would ever go wrong on this trip, but it just went a mile into disaster. I got up to get ready to go to the Airport. Steph could be my only comfort now, seeing that I might not be alive by tomorrow. I'm supposed to be Seducing someone rich perhaps. God, I don't know if I can do this. I mean, what will I do if he refuses to take me home? I tapped my hand impatiently against my thighs before checking my phone for any calls from my bestie. Presently, I was at the airport waiting for her to get here. She was the only person I could talk to at that point and I wanted to pour it all out, beginning from the once night stand. I checked around again and my eyes stopped on a average heightened lady with shades and a traveling bag, catwalking her way to the airport. My lips gave a smile as I recognized who she was. My best friend. Only she would pull a stunt like that. She recognized me easily and spread her free hand out for a hug and I walked right into it. It is one of the things I really need right now. "Oh my darling," she said, and I sighed in embrace. When we let go, I walked right beside her to the exit where she was supposed to get a taxi. "How are you baby?" "I'm good." I knew she would read right into my lie. "C'mon baby girl, who feels good when they just experienced the most heartbreaking breakup of their life?" Steph said to me with a bit of a Spanish accent. She majored in Spanish and had more advantage over me in their language. "Really Steph, I am fine. At least I will be." I sighed as we got into the taxi. I saw her hesitate to press further. "Well, I'm hungry. Can we get something to eat first? I think we should get hamburgers first, then check out as many places as we can." She said excited. "I can't believe my dream came through." I couldn't help but smile. She was happy and for a minute there, I forgot I was upset and worried. I needed to make the trip a nice one. It can't all be a waste. "Sure, let's get hamburgers first," I replied. --- It was the nth time she had taken a photo of us as we walked around. The last two went to her i********: page and she giggled in happiness. "We should take a break," she finally admitted and I chuckled. "Finally," I said and she glared at me but agreed anyway. Presently, we were sitting on an available roadside Chair. Steph had her head on my shoulder as she tried catching her breath. "We just have two days and it'll be all over. This trip, this dream, is only going to last for 2 days and we will be back to our usual boring life." "Nah, that's all you. Did I tell you I met a guy?" Steph said. I turned to stare at her in alert and she sat upright, no longer leaning on me. Could it be-? "A guy? Steph, what's with you and guys?" Steph frowned at my outburst. "Okay, calm down. I know that you lost your guys and everything, but it's me we are talking about." "My life." She emphasized. Only then did I realize I had just made a scene out of nothing. Was she right? Still- "Who is he?" "A graduate of Berkeley, I met him at a club. Don't worry Vanessa, I'm safe." As if she knew. "Fine. I know it's your life but you have to be careful about it. Someone else can pay for it if you get clumsy." I said to her. "I don't get....what...what do you mean Clumsy." There it was. My opportunity to tell her everything from the beginning. How I am being blackmailed into seducing someone for information. When I opened my mouth to let it all out, I found myself remembering the exact words he told me. "Run to the police, words get round faster than you know. I bet you'll live to see it another minute. Tell anyone about this and believe me, nobody that has crossed paths with me has ever lived to tell the tale and so will be the fate of the person you tell. Be it your best friend." "Well Vanessa?" I pressed my lips in a thin line instead. "I just need you to be careful, that's all." When I finished, she scoffed in disbelief. "You are so good at lying. Especially to me." Steph said to me and I knew it was true. I was bad at lying and so I never tried to do anything that would land me in a case where I had to lie. I sighed. "I don't know how to say this but I really need-" I paused when I felt her warm hand on mine. "You don't have to say anything if you don't want to," Steph said to me. "Just know that I'm here for you if you need me. I know how you feel more than you do." Steph said to me. "You don't understand-" I froze when my eyes jammed with a familiar pair. The man sat by the corner, keeping himself busy with the phone call he was making or was pretending to make. I recognized the tattoo on the neck like it was literally yesterday. It was them, one of the people who had me tied to a chair hours ago. He turned away like he wasn't just looking at us. How could I be so foolish? Of course, he'd be watching me. "Vanessa," "Why don't we get back to the hotel? You must be really tired." "What?" She exclaimed calmly before looking around. "Who's tired? Me?" I forced a smile and grabbed her hand. "Come on now, we still have two days here. The least you can do is rest for today. You just got here." I told her and she sighed. "Fine...yes, you're right." She was walking with me willingly now and we were almost at the hotel. If anything was on her mind about how weird I'd been behaving, she had a good way of masking it. I knew I wasn't the perfect bestie and I'd hidden so many things from her. Like how so perfect I made my relationship be even though I knew this would end sooner or later. I'd prefer the latter. I just need a drink now. Checking my phone for time, I realized I was supposed to be leaving in 3 hours. And now, I just have to come up with a perfect reason to keep my best friend here else. I know the b***h will come with me.
