TAMARA
Several weeks had passed, yet we still hadn't heard anything about my twin sister, Tamiko.
I tried not to dwell on the possibility that something terrible had happened to her. Instead, I forced myself to believe she'd simply run away after finding some rich man willing to spoil her and pay for all her luxuries.
My phone chimed with a notification for a new email. My eyes widened, and I nearly jumped out of my seat when I saw the sender.
One of the companies I'd sent my résumé to had finally replied!
"This is it! Yes! Finally! I'm going to have a job!"
I couldn't contain my excitement after reading that I'd been invited for a job interview. I must have shouted louder than I realized because Nyx immediately rushed into my room to see what was going on.
"Nyx! I got a job!" I squealed.
She frowned.
"You already got hired? Without an interview?"
"I still have to go to the interview!" I answered happily.
She grimaced.
"Then you're not hired yet, Tam. You still have to pass the interview, and that's exactly where you could fail. You better prepare yourself,” she warned.
I let out a small gasp. Maybe Nyx was right.
I'd gotten so carried away that I'd already convinced myself I was hired.
"Besides," she continued, "why did you even bother applying for a job? Do you seriously think your mom will let you leave this house?"
And just like that, my excitement vanished. She had a point.
Mom would never agree if she found out I planned to work.
I sighed and looked at Nyx with slumped shoulders.
"What should I do? Should I tell them I can't make it to the interview?" I asked miserably. She knitted her brows.
"You know, Tam? You're always making things harder for yourself. Are you a masochist or something?"
I bit my lower lip and stared down at my feet.
"I just wanted to know what it feels like to apply for a job," I murmured. "You know Mom never let me."
Nyx groaned and muttered a curse under her breath.
"What a messed-up life!"
I looked up at her.
She scratched the side of her eyebrow before speaking again.
"I'm the one who can't remember most of my past, Tam. I'm the one who just got out of a mental hospital. I'm the one who was abandoned by my own family."
She pointed at herself dramatically.
"I'm supposed to be the tragic one here! So why do I feel like you're even more pitiful than I am?"
I pouted and lowered my head again.
After a moment, she sighed.
"Do you really want to experience going to a job interview?"
My eyes lit up.
"Are you going to help me get the job?"
She stared at me in disbelief.
"Seriously? Were you listening while I was insulting you?"
I blinked.
"I can't even get a job myself. How am I supposed to help you? If I had that kind of power, I'd use it on myself first."
I frowned.
"That's too bad... I thought you were actually going to help me."
She groaned dramatically.
"What do you think I am, Tam? Your Fairy Godmother? Tell me honestly... were you Cinderella in your past life?"
I knew she was joking.
But sometimes I really wish I were Cinderella.
At least she'd had someone looking out for her.
"I wish I were Cinderella," I admitted quietly.
"And who's supposed to be your prince?" Nyx teased. "The one who's going to rescue you from your mom's debts? Attorney Revamonte?"
I frowned.
"Why would I think Attorney Revamonte would save me? I still don't even know how he is."
"Good. Don't even think about him."
She grinned mischievously.
"Because he's mine!"
She tugged down the neckline of her shirt just enough to glance at her own cleavage.
"I'm seriously thinking about tattooing the back of his head right here on my chest."
She giggled to herself.
"That way it'll feel like he's nursing from me every single day."
She even made exaggerated munching sounds.
"Nom, nom, nom."
I stared at her.
"Attorney Revamonte is already old, Nyx. Why would he want to... nurse from you? Are you losing your mind again?"
Sometimes I honestly wondered whether the doctors had discharged her from the asylum too soon.
Nyx placed both hands proudly on her chest.
"Oh, please. If Attorney Revamonte ever saw these perfectly healthy boobies, he'd probably wish he could become a baby again—even with all his adult teeth."
I winced.
There were moments when I truly couldn't follow the strange things happening inside her head.
So I decided to change the subject.
"What time is your interview tomorrow?" Nyx asked.
"Ten in the morning."
"Oh, that's perfect."
She flashed a confident grin.
"We can sneak out."
I blinked.
"Huh?"
"Your mom will already be at the casino by then."
"What about the security guard? He won't let us leave."
She waved a dismissive hand.
"Leave him to me."
"How?"
"One quick peek at my boobs, and he'll keep his mouth shut."
I stared at her.
"You're really going to flash him?"
She nodded proudly.
"Just a little consolation prize. Besides, peeking at my boobs is all he'll get."
Then she smirked.
"I know exactly who his wife is."
I could only gape at her.
As weird as her methods were...
...They somehow had a frightening chance of working.
