Yannick's steps came to a sudden halt. Ultimately, he said nothing, turning and taking large strides out of the temporary command tent.
Hailey followed, her thoughts in turmoil.
Mira had misunderstood him. Yannick had never loved Hailey. He had married her because the board had forced the alliance, and even after three years together, she had never found a place in his heart.
Hailey gave a quiet, self-mocking smile. They were already separated by death. There was no reason to keep clinging to the jealousy and disappointment of her life.
At least now she could remain beside him and see him whenever she wished. Perhaps that was enough.
