Chapter 17: The Memory Between Us

1032 Words
The next morning came too quickly. Elena sat at her desk, pretending to scroll through emails, but her eyes kept drifting to the glass wall of Dominic’s office. The chair behind his desk remained empty. No coat slung over it. No low hum of his deep voice on a call. No presence. He hadn’t come in at all. Her phone buzzed. Dominic: Still thinking about you. I’ll be in later today. Let’s talk tonight. My place? She stared at the screen, her stomach flipping. Talk. The word carried weight now. This wasn’t about work. This wasn’t a simple update or a flirtation. He wanted to talk—really talk. And deep down, she knew what it was about. The air between them was too thick with unspoken truths. She hesitated before typing back: Elena: Okay. I’ll come by after work. Then she turned off the screen and exhaled. She had to be ready. For him. For everything. --- Hours later, the knock on his penthouse door felt like a countdown. Elena stood outside, breathless, wrapped in nerves. She wore a soft black sweater dress and ankle boots—simple, safe, not too suggestive, not too cold. Her heart beat violently in her chest. Dominic opened the door. He looked tired, like he hadn’t slept. His usually sharp features were softened by a trace of vulnerability. He stepped aside without a word and let her in. The apartment smelled like sandalwood and coffee. It was dimly lit, the city lights beyond the windows glowing faintly. For a moment, they just stood there, neither moving, neither speaking. “Thanks for coming,” he finally said. Elena gave him a small smile. “I figured it was time.” He walked into the living room, motioning for her to follow. They sat on opposite ends of the couch, a few feet apart, though it felt like miles. Dominic rubbed his jaw. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking.” “About…?” “That night. The way you touch me. The way it feels like I know you. And this weird feeling—like I’ve been through this before.” Elena’s pulse skipped. “I saw something today,” he continued. “An old article from when I was a kid. About my accident. I almost drowned at a lake when I was twelve. I barely remember it… just flashes. Water. Panic. Then a girl. Long, dark hair. She saved me.” Elena’s breath caught. “I asked my parents about it,” he said slowly. “They told me the girl never gave her name. She just disappeared after the ambulance came. I never saw her again.” He looked at her now, eyes full of something raw. “Elena, was it you?” The words dropped into the silence like a stone in water. She felt exposed, her heart pounding against her ribs. Her hands trembled in her lap. “Yes,” she whispered. “It was me.” Dominic blinked, as if he hadn’t expected confirmation. “I was visiting my aunt that summer,” she continued, voice shaky. “We were staying near the lake. I saw you fall in. You were struggling. I jumped in without thinking.” “Why didn’t you say anything?” “I was scared,” she admitted. “You didn’t remember me. And when I got the job at your company years later, I didn’t know if it mattered anymore. Then… then everything got complicated.” He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor for a long moment. “I’ve dreamed about that girl for years. Wondering who she was. What she looked like. Why she saved me.” “I didn’t want recognition,” Elena said gently. “I just wanted you to live.” His head turned slowly toward her, eyes shining with something fierce and tender. “You changed my life,” he said. “If you hadn’t been there…” “I know.” He stood, pacing, running a hand through his hair. “This explains so much. Why I felt connected to you from the beginning. Why I couldn’t stay away.” She stood, watching him. “I didn’t want to lie to you, Dominic. I just didn’t know how to tell you without sounding crazy.” He turned and stepped toward her. “You’re not crazy. You’re… you’re everything I’ve been searching for, and I didn’t even realize it.” Her eyes filled with tears. Dominic reached out, brushing her cheek with the backs of his fingers. “You saved my life, Elena. Twice, if you count what you’ve done to my heart.” Her lips parted, a sob catching in her throat. “I didn’t do anything—” “You loved me before I even remembered who you were. That’s not nothing.” He pulled her into his arms, and she sank into him, burying her face in his chest. His warmth surrounded her, and for the first time in a long time, the weight she’d been carrying felt lighter. After a while, he pulled back, eyes searching hers. “Stay tonight.” She hesitated. “I’m scared.” “I know,” he said. “So am I. But this… us… it’s real. I don’t want to keep pretending it’s not.” She nodded slowly. “Okay.” --- Later that night, wrapped in his sheets, Elena lay in the circle of his arms. They didn’t make love again—at least not yet. This time was different. This time, it was about the heart, not just the body. He traced small circles on her bare back. “Do you think we met back then for a reason?” She smiled softly. “I don’t believe in accidents.” “Fate?” “Maybe.” He kissed the top of her head. “Then maybe this is where we were always meant to end up.” She curled into him, her soul finally quiet. But as she drifted off, one thought lingered. What happens when the world finds out? Because secrets always have a cost. And their story was only just beginning.
