Chapter Six: The Ultimatum

1269 Words
The moment the door closed behind Vanessa, Elena felt the weight of a thousand decisions crashing down on her chest. She wanted to scream, to cry, to run—but most of all, she wanted to call Dominic. Tell him everything. Let him handle it. Let him protect her, like he promised he would. But deep down, she knew that wasn’t an option. Vanessa wasn’t bluffing. One wrong move, and everything Dominic had built—his company, his legacy, his name—would be destroyed. And worse, it would be Elena’s face on every tabloid. The intern who slept her way into a billionaire’s bed. The manipulative girl from nowhere who brought down an empire. She stared at her phone, thumb hovering over Dominic’s contact. Then she turned it off. --- Later That Day – Kingstone Enterprises Elena entered the building like a ghost. She kept her head down, avoided eye contact, and faked a smile when she had to. Every corner of the office reminded her of him. His voice. His touch. His confession. And now, she was supposed to throw it all away to protect him? “Elena!” Grace called out, waving her over. “Mr. Kingstone requested your presence in his office.” She hesitated. Her pulse quickened. What was she supposed to do? Lie to him? Pretend nothing had happened? She forced herself to nod and walked slowly to the elevator. When the doors opened to the executive floor, Dominic was already waiting—leaning against his desk, arms crossed, watching her. His eyes lit up when he saw her. “Hey,” he said, a rare softness in his voice. “Hi.” “You okay?” No. “Yes.” He walked toward her, gently pulling her into his arms. “I missed you today.” Elena closed her eyes and clung to him like it might be the last time. She wanted to freeze this moment—lock it away before it shattered. He pulled back just enough to study her face. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing,” she lied. “Just tired.” Dominic didn’t look convinced, but he nodded. “I wanted to ask you something.” Her heart skipped. “What?” “I’m flying to Paris in two days. A big investor summit. I want you to come with me.” Her throat tightened. “Don’t worry,” he added with a crooked smile. “You’ll have your own room. Unless… you don’t want to.” “I do,” she whispered, tears pricking her eyes. “But… I can’t.” He frowned. “Why not?” She forced a smile. “It wouldn’t look good. People are already talking.” “To hell with what people think.” “I care,” she said, barely holding it together. “And you should too.” “Elena…” He reached for her, but she stepped back. “I just need space,” she said quickly. “Just a few days. Please.” He looked confused. Hurt. “Did something happen?” “No,” she said too fast. “I just—need to think.” He nodded slowly, his jaw tight. “If you change your mind, there’s a seat for you.” Elena turned and walked out before he could see her break. --- That Night – Elena’s Apartment Elena sat on the edge of her bed, replaying Vanessa’s threat over and over again. Leave him… or I ruin him. Her thoughts spiraled. She’d worked so hard to build her life. To be independent. Strong. Smart. But now she felt like she was back to that girl in the lake, pulling someone to safety while losing pieces of herself in the process. This time, no one could save her. She had to choose: her heart or his empire. --- Elsewhere – Vanessa’s Condo Vanessa lounged on her velvet couch, sipping red wine and scrolling through her drafts. The headline was ready. "Billionaire Caught in Scandalous Affair with Intern—Sources Say She Was Targeting Him All Along." She had the pictures. The messages. The timeline. All she needed was a reason to press publish. And if Elena didn’t run, she would. “Tick-tock, sweetheart,” Vanessa whispered. “Tick. Tock.” --- The Next Morning – A Goodbye Elena typed her resignation letter with shaking hands. Every word felt like a betrayal. To Dominic. To her heart. To the memory of the boy she once saved, and the man who made her feel alive again. When she finished, she printed it, slid it into an envelope, and left it on his desk—right beside the cufflink he’d dropped the night of the gala. She walked out of the building without looking back. --- Hours Later – Dominic’s Office Dominic walked into his office, expecting to find Elena waiting with her usual nervous smile and a coffee in her hands. Instead, he found silence. Then his eyes landed on the envelope. He tore it open, his hands growing tighter with every line. When he reached the end, his eyes were wide with disbelief. She left. No warning. No explanation. Just a letter. “No,” he muttered, shaking his head. “No, she wouldn’t do this.” He called her cell. Straight to voicemail. He tried again. And again. Nothing. He slammed his hand against his desk, fury rising in his chest. “Elena,” he growled, “what the hell did you do?” --- Later That Night – Elena’s Apartment There was a knock at the door. Elena opened it slowly, expecting Vanessa again. Instead, it was Dominic. Soaked from the rain. Hair dripping. Tie undone. He looked wrecked. “What the hell is going on?” he demanded. Her breath caught. “You shouldn’t be here.” “You ghosted me. Quit without a word. Why?” “Dominic…” “Did I do something wrong? Did someone threaten you? Tell me right now.” She broke. The tears came fast and hot. “I did it for you!” He froze. “I did it because she’s going to ruin you, Dominic. Vanessa. She said if I didn’t walk away, she’d release everything. And you—your company—you’d lose it all.” He stepped forward, voice low. “You think I care about that more than I care about you?” “She said no one would believe me. That I’d be blamed. That you would be dragged into a scandal.” “I don’t give a damn what the press says.” “I do!” she cried. “Because you don’t deserve this. You didn’t ask for any of it. And I love you too much to be the reason you lose everything.” The words echoed between them like a thunderclap. She hadn’t meant to say it. Not like that. But it was true. She loved him. Dominic’s eyes darkened, then softened all at once. He stepped close, cupped her face in both hands, and whispered, “Say that again.” “I love you,” she choked out. “Even if it means letting you go.” He kissed her—slow, deep, fierce. Then pulled back and looked her straight in the eyes. “You’re not letting me go,” he said. “You’re not saving me by breaking us. You’re everything I’ve been looking for since that night in the lake.” She clung to him, sobbing. And for the first time in days, she didn’t feel like she was drowning anymore.
