Monday August, 18 1862 The next morning I wake up to chanting and singing, all alone in a slave hut. Either the other inhabitants have already cleared out to go to the fields, or no one wanted to sleep in the same hut as Miss Elizabeth. I groan and stand, squinting, and decide to walk around the quarters, knowing nowhere else to go. I see mostly small children, all wearing the same horrible brown shifts that Anna used to wear. Old women are tending small gardens by the huts, as well as tending to the children. I wander aimlessly for a while, and then I see the place where the slaves grind their corn, and a well.
