The Game of Shadows

Scarlett POV Scarlett Hayes hadn't expected her second week at Veridian Crown University to be any easier than her first. If anything, it was worse. Every hallway felt like a battlefield, every glance a challenge, and every whisper behind her back a warning. But Scarlett had faced worse than judgmental stares — she would not be intimidated. Yet there was no denying it. Dominic Kingsley's attention was no longer casual. It had become a weight, heavy and undeniable, pressing down on her with every step she took. She had hoped that staying out of his path would be enough, but it wasn't. In the cafeteria, her every move was being watched like a spectacle. Dominic was seated across the room with Julian and Victor, Alexander beside him. Their eyes flicked toward her every few seconds — calculating, observing, testing. Julian whispered something to Dominic, who smirked faintly. Victor merely nodded, expressionless, as if approving some silent plan. Alexander, as always, offered Scarlett a small, reassuring glance — one that reminded her she wasn't entirely alone in this storm. It was during lunch that it happened. Scarlett was moving toward an empty table when she collided with someone. "Watch where you're going!" a cold voice snapped. Scarlett looked up and found herself staring into Dominic's piercing dark eyes. The cafeteria seemed to shrink around them — whispers stopped, eyes turned, and even Julian froze mid-laugh. "I am watching," Scarlett said firmly, refusing to bow or shrink away. Dominic's lips curved slightly, almost imperceptibly. He reached out and steadied her arm — but there was a warning in the grip that made her pulse quicken. "Careful," he said. "You're stepping into dangerous territory." Before Scarlett could respond, Alexander stepped up beside her. "It's okay," he said softly, placing a hand gently on her shoulder. "Don't let him intimidate you." Dominic's gaze flicked to Alexander, and for a moment, the tension between them was almost tangible. Scarlett realized then that the four boys weren't just observing her — they were each subtly testing the boundaries of her relationships, and each other. That night, Scarlett's phone buzzed again. *Unknown Number: Day two. He wants control. Be ready. Protect yourself… and your heart.* Scarlett frowned. Her heart raced. How did this person know so much? And why did it feel as though Dominic himself was part of the warning? She tried to push the thought aside. There was no time to overthink. She had lectures, assignments, and now… this game with Dominic. The next day, Scarlett found herself summoned to the student council room — a grand office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the campus. A sense of dread prickled her nerves as she stepped inside. Dominic was already there, seated in the center chair, hands clasped, exuding an air of authority. Julian lounged nearby, Victor stood by the window, and Alexander was off to the side, silent but attentive. "Scarlett," Dominic said, his tone sharp. "We need to talk about… rules." Scarlett raised an eyebrow. "Rules?" "You've made yourself visible," he said. "You've refused to bow. You've drawn attention. That… can't go unchecked." Scarlett swallowed, but she didn't flinch. "I'm not invisible. I'm not going to bow to someone because of wealth or fear." Dominic's eyes narrowed, and for the first time, his patience seemed to crack. "Bold," he muttered. "Dangerously bold." Julian chuckled. "She's going to be fun," he said, smirking. Victor remained silent, observing. Alexander's gaze softened — concerned for Scarlett, aware that this confrontation was about more than appearances. Dominic leaned back in his chair, a slow, deliberate smirk forming. "Fun… or trouble?" he said. "Time will tell." That evening, Scarlett returned to her dorm, exhausted. Her phone buzzed again. *Unknown Number: Rules are being set. Choose carefully which battles you fight. Some losses can't be recovered.* Scarlett's stomach twisted. Whoever was sending these messages had knowledge she couldn't explain. And Dominic… his presence lingered in her thoughts — inescapable, unsettling, and strangely compelling. The next day, during a campus gala — a mandatory social event for students and visiting sponsors — the tension between Scarlett and Dominic escalated. She was wearing a simple, elegant dress that her scholarship money had barely afforded, feeling exposed among the wealthiest students she had ever seen. Dominic appeared beside her suddenly, as if he had materialized from the shadows. "You shouldn't have worn that," he said quietly, his tone low and dangerous. "You'll attract the wrong kind of attention." Scarlett didn't flinch. "I don't need protection." Dominic's eyes darkened. "We'll see," he said, and then he left her standing there, the threat lingering like smoke in the air. Alexander appeared moments later, worry etched on his face. "You have to be careful," he whispered. "He's… unpredictable." Scarlett felt torn. She wanted to trust Alexander, yet something about Dominic made her pulse quicken despite the fear. There was power in his presence, danger she couldn't ignore — and a curiosity she couldn't deny. As the gala progressed, whispers and glances followed Scarlett. She realized that she wasn't just being observed — she was being measured. Every smile, every glance, every word could be twisted, tested, or used. She noticed Victor's calculating eyes, Julian's playful smirk, and Alexander's concerned gaze. But it was Dominic who mattered most. Later that night, Scarlett's phone buzzed again. *Unknown Number: Tonight, the game escalates. Be ready. Some choices can't be undone.* Scarlett's heart raced. Her pulse pounded. Whoever was sending the messages knew more than they should. And she had the sinking realization that her life at Veridian Crown University was no longer just about surviving exams — it was about surviving the boys, the power plays, and the dangerous obsession she had unwittingly stepped into. And somewhere across the campus, Dominic Kingsley was watching her, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He didn't know why he was fascinated, why he couldn't look away, why the girl who refused to bow had captured his attention so completely. He only knew one t hing: Scarlett Hayes had crossed a line. And Dominic Kingsley never forgive anyone who ever crossed the lines.
