Scarlett POV
The morning sun barely pierced the thick fog lingering over Viridian Crown University. Scarlett Hayes sat on a bench in the quad, her hands clenched tightly around her bag. Her mind was racing, replaying the events of last night, the basement, the attack, Dominic's intervention, and Alexander's sudden danger. Everything had escalated so quickly that she barely had time to catch her breath.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown Number: Phase three begins tonight. Choices must be precise. One mistake… and everything collapses.
Scarlett's pulse quickened. She knew now that the messages weren't random, they were warnings. Directives. Someone out there was orchestrating this game, and she was firmly in the middle of it.
Alexander appeared, hurried and flustered, walking toward her. "Scarlett, are you okay?" he asked, his concern palpable. "Last night… I almost didn't make it. Those men… I think they were working for someone. Someone higher up than even Dominic."
Scarlett's stomach twisted. "Higher than Dominic?" she asked. "But who? His family?"
Alexander shook his head. "I don't know. But it's connected to him. I think Dominic knows more than he's letting on… and part of this test… part of it… is designed to see how far you'll go to protect people you care about."
Scarlett's mind raced. Protect people? How many were caught in this web now? And was she supposed to trust Dominic… or fear him even more?
Later that evening, Scarlett received a text from Dominic.
Dominic: Meet me at the old observatory. Alone. Answers await, but danger follows every step.
The observatory had been abandoned for decades, a forgotten relic on the edge of campus. Its broken windows and rusted spiral stairs made it perfect for secrecy. Scarlett approached cautiously, the cold night air biting at her skin.
As she stepped inside, shadows swallowed her. A figure emerged from the darkness, Dominic. He looked different tonight: intense, commanding, but with a vulnerability that made Scarlett's chest tighten.
"You came," he said. "Good. But I need you to understand something. Last night… the attack on Alexander… It wasn't random. It was meant to see how you'd respond. To see if you'd make choices under pressure."
Scarlett's brow furrowed. "So… it was a test?"
Dominic's eyes darkened. "Yes. But the consequences were real. If you had hesitated… or panicked… he could have been seriously hurt. And that's the point, Scarlett. Every decision here carries weight. Every choice has a cost."
Scarlett swallowed hard. Her stomach twisted at the realization. "And you… you orchestrated this?"
Dominic shook his head, almost sharply. "I didn't order the attack. But I allowed it. I let it happen,to see who you truly are. To see if you could handle the reality of this… world."
Her heart raced. Fear, anger, and something else something she couldn't name, coiled tightly in her chest. "And if I fail?" she asked quietly.
"You won't," Dominic said firmly. "But understand this these games aren't just about control or obsession. They're about survival. And survival at Veridian Crown isn't given… it's earned."
Before Scarlett could respond, the observatory's old metal stairs groaned. Julian stepped into the dim light, smirking. "I hope you two aren't planning to solve all the mysteries tonight," he said. "Because trust me… the biggest twist is still waiting."
Victor emerged behind him, arms crossed, expression cold and unreadable. "The game isn't over. And the shadows… the ones who pull the strings… are closer than you realize."
Scarlett felt a chill run down her spine. The truth was becoming more complex than she could process. Every ally she had, Dominic, Alexander, even Julian was now a potential player in a game she wasn't sure she could win.
Dominic stepped forward, his hand brushing lightly against Scarlett's. "I need you to understand one thing," he said, voice low, almost a whisper. "You're not just a participant… you're the key. The reason things are moving at all. And that… terrifies people."
Scarlett's chest tightened. "Why me?" she asked, her voice barely audible.
Dominic's dark eyes softened for the briefest second. "Because you're not like the others. You fight. You think. You don't submit. And… you make me question things I've never questioned before."
Scarlett's heart fluttered, but fear grounded her. "I don't know if I should trust you… or fear you."
Dominic smiled a dangerous, irresistible curve of his lips. "That's exactly the point."
Suddenly, the observatory's door slammed shut. Scarlett spun around, heart leaping. Outside, the fog swirled but the campus lights were gone. They were trapped.
Julian's laughter echoed through the space. "Welcome to phase three," he said. "It's time to see who really controls the game… and who's just playing."
Victor stepped forward, a folder in hand. "The next challenge isn't physical or mental. It's personal. Someone close to you… will be tested. And you… will be forced to make a choice that could change everything."
Scarlett's pulse raced. "Who? Who's involved?"
Victor didn't answer. He simply handed her the folder.
Inside were photographs and documents that made Scarlett's stomach churn. Her family, Alexander, even Dominic's own inner circle everything was connected. The web of manipulation stretched far beyond what she had imagined. Every choice she had made in the past weeks had been observed, analyzed, and twisted to create the perfect storm.
Her hands shook. "This… this is insane."
Dominic stepped closer. "And it's only going to get worse. But understand this every danger, every risk, every test… I've never wanted to hurt you. Not truly. But someone else… is orchestrating things. Someone who wants control, not love."
Scarlett's heart pounded. "Then… who?"
Dominic's lips curved into a small, almost painful smile. "That… is the question we'll both have to answer. And the answer… may shock you."
As the night stretched on, Scarlett realized the truth she had been avoiding, the game at Veridian Crown University wasn't over. It was evolving. The shadows were deeper, the stakes higher, and the people she trusted, Dominic, Alexander, even Julian were all part of the dangerous dance she was forced to play.
And the twist the one that would leave her reeling, was yet to come.
Because the folder hinted at something chilling: a secret about Dominic himself. Something buried deep in his family's past that could destroy everything… and someone she cared about most.
Scarlett swallowed hard, her hands trembling. The words on the documents blurred before her eyes. She realized that tonight…
Nothing would ever be the same.
