Once inside, the smell of coffee hit me immediately. Even knowing what type of place it was, I wasn’t quite prepared for how strong it would be. I stood in the doorway and took in my surroundings. There were signs scattered around with coffee sayings on them, a long counter against the back wall with various types of coffee makers and a counter in the front with a cash register and a display full of various muffins. A few tables and chairs were off to the side where an older couple sat at one whispering and smiling to one another.
Suddenly there was a slam and a guy came out from a door back behind the counter, tying his apron as he walked.
He was tall with shaggy hair and biceps that almost ripped through the white button down shirt he wore underneath the black apron with a simple white coffee decal on the front of it. Immediately my heart sped up. He was a very attractive man and if things went well, I would be working alongside him. Maybe we could even get things going.
“Hello?” He snapped his fingers in front of me and I could tell by the look on his face that he was not exactly happy to see me just standing there planning our future together.
“What can I help you with?” He asked no longer looking at me.
Almost immediately I felt a bad vibe coming from him. I just looked at him at a loss for words. Scowling he rolled his eyes and began to wipe down the counter with a rag he seemed to have magically produced out of thin air.
“Well if you get your head out of your ass and remember what you want, let me know.” He spit the words at me as though I were beneath him.
How dare he! He had never even met me before and here he was already insulting me.
“Do you speak to all of your customers this way?” I asked him, straightening myself up a little bit to try to make myself appear more confident than I felt.
He stopped wiping the counter and looked me in the eyes, seeming to study me. I noticed they were dark brown and seemed to lack any emotion behind them. He didn’t smile at me or make any attempt to conceal his annoyance.
“Only the ones that come in here not knowing what they want. I don’t like people that just waste my time.”
I felt my face flush and my body begin to tremble as anger poured through me.
“For your information, I am not a customer and I do not want to order anything from you.”
“Then what do you want exactly?”
“I’m here for an interview with Mr. Johnson.” I held my head up high, hoping that this would make him reconsider his current attitude. Instead, he rolled his eyes and groaned loudly.
“For Christs sake, what would Christopher want with you? You come in here wearing that,” he paused to wave his hand up and down in front of me, “with those” pointing at my shoes “and you think you’ll be able to work during the rush making coffee? I bet you would break your neck within the first fifteen minutes.”
My face flushed again as I realized he had most likely seen me almost eat asphalt.
“If you don’t mind, I would appreciate you letting him know I’m here. I don’t think we have anything else to say to each other at this point.”
Throwing his hands up in surrender, he vanished back through the door he had come out of earlier.
I was wrong about this guy; we did not have a future together.
