Driving around the parking lot, the only spot once again was beside the beat up truck. It was over the line again today and it was clear that this person didn’t care about parking inside the lines.
Navigating my car carefully, I parked with just enough space for me to get out without bumping into the car next to me. I took a quick glance at the clock on the dash; five minutes to spare.
Getting out of the car I felt very self conscious. Yesterday I felt foolish when I tripped but I thought I was in the clear without being seen until Leo pointed it out. Today I would be extra cautious. Slowly I made my way across the curb and headed towards the coffee shop. I stopped and looked up once more at the sign. Smiling my heart fluttered. I finally had a job and nothing was going to ruin this day today.
Suddenly a horn blared and a car swerved to miss me.
“Get the hell out of the road you jackass!” A man yelled at me while half hanging out of his window.
My hand flew to my chest, my heart going a million miles a minute. I hadn’t realized I was still in the road when I stopped. Gathering my wits about me I quickly made my way to the sidewalk and opened the door. The little tinkle from the bell signaled my entrance.
The old couple from the day before was there again but this time they were looking at me as they whispered. Leo was behind the counter, palms down on it with a smirk on his face.
“You just really know how to make an impression don’t you?”
My face flushed. Once again he had seen me make a fool of myself. This was not at all how I had hoped my first day would go; especially before I had even clocked in for my shift. I held my head down as I walked behind the counter.
“Yeah I guess I wouldn’t want to say anything either if I almost got myself killed while doing some stupid s**t like standing in the middle of the road.”
What an asshole! Glaring at him I put my hand on my hip.
“I didn’t realize I was in the middle of the road.”
“It’s call spatial awareness. You should look into it sometimes.”
Turning away from him, I focused on the computer.
“Can you show me how to clock in please?”
I hated asking him for anything but I knew that I had no choice if I wanted to get clocked in and paid for my time here.
Walking over he clicked the enter button on the keyboard.
“First and last name and then the last four of your social is the password. Then click enter.”
He watched the screen waiting for me to do as he told. I entered my first and last name as he said and my last four of my social but when I hit enter, it showed invalid.
Sighing, he frowned and pushed me to the side positioning himself in front of the computer.
“Just let me do it.” He barked at me.
He entered my first and last name and then asked for the last four of my social. After I told him, I watched him tap the enter button and once again it showed invalid.
I smiled smugly at him.
“Guess it wasn’t my fault after all.” I told him.
He pinched the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger.
“I guess Christopher forgot to put you in the system. You’ll have to go back there and get that taken care of. You can’t work off the clock.”
Great. Just another delay in my already screwed up day.
