Amelia's pov The car ride was a journey through silence, marked only by the hum of the engine and the soft patter of rain against the windows. Braylon, Lucian’s beta, drove with a practiced calm, his eyes focused on the road ahead. Lucian sat beside me in the backseat, his presence both reassuring and intimidating. The cabin was warm, but the air was charged with an uneasy tension that neither the climate control nor Braylon’s small talk could dispel. Braylon, sensing the weight of the moment, tried to break the silence. “Amelia, have you ever had a chance to visit the northern part of the territory? It’s quite beautiful there, especially this time of year. The landscape is something you don’t want to miss.” I forced a smile, though it felt like a strain. “No, I haven’t had the opportunity. I’ve mostly stayed closer to the packhouse.” Braylon nodded. “It’s quite different from the packhouse. More serene. It’s a good place to clear your mind and get away from... everything.” His words were meant to comfort, but they only seemed to underline the reality of my situation. I appreciated the effort but found it hard to fully relax. Lucian sat beside me, his gaze fixed on the passing landscape. His silence was both a comfort and a burden, a reminder of the gravity of the moment. The journey felt endless, each mile stretching into an eternity. Then, out of nowhere, I felt a light pressure on my thigh. I glanced down to see Lucian’s arm resting there. The sensation was electrifying,a warm rush that sent a jolt of heat through me. It was an intimate gesture that made my heart race and my breath hitch. I looked up, meeting Lucian’s profile. His attention was still on the outside world, oblivious to the effect his touch was having on me. Lucian must have sensed it too, for his arm retracted almost immediately. The sudden removal of his touch left me with a mix of relief and disappointment. The silence that followed was thicker than before. Braylon’s attempt at conversation had fizzled out, and we rode in a heavy quiet. The landscape outside blurred as the car continued its journey, and I tried to focus on steadying my breathing. Lucian’s scent lingered, a complex mix of warmth and power that I found both comforting and unsettling. As we finally reached the retreat, the evening had settled into a serene calm. The northern retreat was a quaint structure, nestled among trees that seemed to whisper in the gentle breeze. Lanterns cast a soft, welcoming light, contrasting sharply with the oppressive atmosphere I’d been carrying all day. Lucian and Braylon helped me out of the car, and I took in the pack house’s cozy appearance. My heart was still racing, though the soothing ambiance of the pack house offered a momentary reprieve from the day’s turmoil. Lucian turned to me, his expression a blend of concern and understanding. “Amelia, would you be comfortable sharing a room with me tonight, or would you prefer some time apart?” I hesitated, the thought of sleeping in the same bed as Lucian felt overwhelming. “I... I don’t think I’m ready for that. I need some space, if that’s alright.” Lucian’s gaze softened, and he nodded with a gentle understanding. “Of course. We’ll arrange a separate room for you. Take as much time as you need.” I gave him a grateful nod and made my way to the room they had prepared. The house's interior was as cozy as the exterior, with warm wood tones and soft furnishings that seemed to invite relaxation. I found a small bathroom and decided to take a shower, hoping the warmth of the water would help wash away some of the emotional weight I was carrying. The steam enveloped me as I stood under the shower, letting the hot water cascade over me. I closed my eyes, letting the sensations distract me from the turmoil inside. Thoughts of Mia, my dormant wolf, resurfaced. Lucian’s presence had stirred something within me, something I hadn’t felt in years. Mia had been silent since my parents’ deaths, but something had shifted today. As I stepped out of the shower, the exhaustion of the day hit me hard. I sank onto the edge of the bed, feeling a deep weariness settle over me. Just then, Mia’s voice, once faint and distant, became clear and insistent in the recesses of my mind. “Amelia...”The voice was soft, almost a whisper, but unmistakable. “I remember...” I sat in silence, the sound of Mia’s voice a comforting presence amidst the exhaustion. She seemed to be waking from a long slumber. The realization that Mia was responsive again, even in this fragmented way, was both strange and reassuring. I lay down on the bed, feeling the weight of the day finally pulling me under. As I drifted off, my dreams became a swirling storm of fragmented memories. Images from that fateful night began to surface, glimpses of shadows, flashes of chaos. The face in the shadows was familiar, its features obscured but its presence unmistakable. The face stayed hidden in the darkness, quietly observing the chaotic events of that night. It was a troubling presence, its meaning just beyond my grasp. The memories were fragmented and confusing, which left me feeling uneasy as I drifted further into sleep. In the darkness of my dreams, the shadows grew more oppressive, and the face remained a constant, elusive presence. The unease that had settled in my gut was mirrored by the growing anxiety in my dreamscape. The familiar face from the past was a specter that refused to be fully revealed, its significance hinting at deeper, unresolved issues. I woke from the unsettling dreams with a start, the room around me dimly lit by the soft glow of a nightlight. My heart was pounding, and I felt a deep sense of foreboding. The dreams had left me with more questions than answers, and the face from my memories was a lingering puzzle. As I lay back down, the silence of the room was both a comfort and a challenge. The fragments of memories from that night were like puzzle pieces scattered in my mind, waiting to be assembled. The face in the shadows, the chaos,it was all so close, yet frustratingly out of reach. The day had been long and emotionally draining, and as I finally drifted back to sleep, the feeling of suspense and unease lingered, promising more revelations to come. Whatever awaited me, I knew I would have to face it with the strength I was still trying to reclaim. What I didn't understand is whether or not all the resurfacing memories had anything to do with Mia's return. And so, with the memory of the haunting face and the shadow of the past pressing upon me, I closed my eyes once more, bracing myself for whatever lay ahead.
