Ch 6 A Girl's First Money Catch - Mary

Mary saw the city of Sumar in the distance. “Finally! We are almost there Brutus, I can see it in the distance!”
She ran forward and looked at the city from a distance. Brutus towered behind Mary, smiling but preferring to stay silent. The pair walked a distance on the path when they saw a traveler and an old ragged man who looked like a farmer.
Excited to meet a local, Mary called out to him. The old farmer looked up. He saw a red-headed girl who looked rather tomboyish, but behind her, he saw a muscled giant, clearly someone who took money for a living rather than worked for it.
He ran up to them and fell on his knees. “Please, don’t hurt me, I’ve got five coppers for you, please take it and I’ll be off.”
He quickly stuffed the coins into Mary’s hands and hurriedly ran off before she could even react.
“Eh??? What just happened?” She stood there and looked at the five coppers in her hand. She looked back and saw Brutus looking a little down. Finally understanding, she sighed and patted Brutus on the arm. She couldn’t quite reach his shoulder,
“There, there Brutus, no need to take any words from him now, he doesn’t know how sweet you are!”
Brutus looked down and appeared a little happier. He sniffled and said, “Thank you.”
Brutus didn’t talk that much, so those few words meant quite a lot to Mary. She looked at the copper coins and said, “Well, might as well put these to use. We can go stay at a tavern and find a contract full of adventure to fulfill in the morning!”
Brutus nodded his head in agreement, and the pair went to enter the city of Sumar and start their real journey.
Ch 7: Powers and a World Unknown - Acacius
Nero, Nicolas, and Acacius were all sitting in a circle that night after finding a room in a decent, affordable inn. It was a comfortable place, and their room had three clean beds, which was hard to find at cheaper inns.
Nero looked up at the two and started off his explanation by saying, “You both are extremely weak right now. You guys have no idea of the world hidden in the shadows of your world. For example, the old supreme knight of Faton, I think his name started with an A... I can’t remember, but anyway, he had powers and abilities of his own.”
“There are many people in this world but I would say only about a few possess any kind of ability or power. Even fewer of those with powers have abilities that could be considered immense.
“There is no logic to these powers, except that individuals with powers have always had some influence in the world. I am one of those few people with immense powers. My power has to do with control over shadow and darkness, and I can do many things within these realms of control.”
To prove his point, Nero lifted his hand. A shadow appeared on the floor, and it slowly grew until it took on the appearance of a faded black wolf. Acacius and Nicolas both stared wide-eyed in shock as the wolf growled and then faded back into the floor.
Nero looked at them and smiled when he saw their faces. “That is just a taste of the power that I hold. But those guys that you are chasing also have immense power. I only have a bit of information on them, but one of them has extreme control over fire, and the other has extreme control over the earth.
“Both are very powerful, and both are elemental power users.”
Acacius abruptly cut in. “Slow down for a second. How many different kinds of powers are there? Why is their control so good over those elements?”
Nero shot him a an annoyed look. “The variations are almost endless. I’ve heard of people who can move things with their mind or people who can raise the dead, or people who simply move faster or are stronger than others.
“There is an endless amount of possibilities, however elemental powers tend to be a little stronger than the rest. These two, in particular, have immense power when it comes to fire and earth.”
Nicolas looked a bit worried. “How do we fight them? I’m just saying dude, it seems like we really don’t have a chance at all.”
Nero smiled. “That’s where I come in. I can feel that you, Acacius, have powers. You do not know this yet, but you will find out what they are soon enough.” Nero looked a Nicolas, somewhat sadly, but quickly covered it up. “Nicolas I am afraid that you do not have any powers you have access to now, so for you we will need to go out and find some legendary equipment, including a legendary weapon. None of that will be easy to find, but I know that we can find it.
“Until then I need to help you, Acacius, figure out what your abilities are.” Nero stared intently at Acacius. “There are two ways to figure out your power. One way is to experiment on your own until you can figure out what your powers are and slowly master them. But that way takes a very long time.
“The second way is to have someone with immense power draw your power out of you. This method is very efficient and quick, but extremely painful. In order to track those guys that you are after, this is the only method left to us.”
Acacius looked extremely nervous. “You never even asked me what I would like to do though.”
Nero looked at him and gave him an eerie smile. “Pack up your stuff. We are all going out into the woods tonight.”
Nicolas sighed as they were leaving, “but we already paid for the room tonight.”
Nero glanced over, “Don’t worry, Acacius will earn it back in blood.”
