DOMINIC The building was mostly dark when I got back from the office. It was eleven-twenty. The car service had taken forty minutes in traffic and I had been at my desk since seven that morning and I had eaten something around two in the afternoon that did not really qualify as a meal. The Beaumont acquisition had moved into a new phase that week — Robert's call to James had opened a door that I had been pushing against for six months and now there was real pressure to move before another buyer positioned themselves — and the kind of work that came with that was the kind that did not stop at a sensible hour.
