The Hunt

They walked along the River for what seemed like hours , the gnawing hunger in her stomach intensified with each step she took. Suddenly the sweetest smell hit her nostrils and she looked at Never with excitement. He smiled and pointed to where the outline of a town was just coming into view. It was Alexandrea, herself! They navigated the maze of houses and tents expertly. A small, low growl escaped her lips as she hunted. Her movements were lithe and cat-like, her senses laser focused on the task at hand. She was beautiful. The smell was so sweet, so close. It led her to a dimly lit alleyway where a small child sat playing. She recognized him as the little boy who had shot out under her horse that day. All that didn’t matter anymore, he was food, now. Her body tightened, a loaded spring waiting to be sprung. Her fangs were out and dripping venom. Her eyes glowed red with hunger. Her hands curled into deadly claws, the child couldn’t fathom the danger he was in. Suddenly a scream shattered the silence of the night. Anuxsous’ head whipped toward the sound and a blood chilling snarl came from her throat. Just like lightning she was off, chasing the sound. Never followed her, intrigued. The scene they found was a brutal one, a woman younger than Anuxsous fighting against a very large man. He had ripped the clothes from her body and was pushing himself into her, hard. Anuxsous’ eyes burned with anger and she was on the man like a flash. He had time to choke out one single gurgling scream before she drained him dry. The young woma opened her eyes in time to see Anuxous slowly rise above her. The weight of the dead man shifted off her, freeing her, but she was frozen to the spot where she lay. Blood dripped from the other woman’s lips, the crimson ring around her eyes fading, slightly. She stared down at the girl, her hunger had faded but had not subsided. She wiped the blood from her face and growled at the girl. “Run!” she hissed and as if startled from a dream the girl scrambled to her feet and ran into the darkness. It took everything in Anuxsous not to give chase. Never walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. “The hunger will never fully be satisfied, but it can be controlled.” She nodded wearily and shrugged his hand from her body before melting into the dark.
