Chapter 11

Freya’s POV I stood frozen just outside the heavy oak doors, my blood boiling as I listened to the council elders tear me apart. These were the same men and women I had known since childhood… the ones I had called “Uncle” and “Aunt,” the ones I had shared meals and laughter with at family gatherings. Now they revealed themselves as snakes, plotting to strip me of my birthright. Unfit to rule? The words echoed in my mind like a challenge. I had spent my entire life studying leadership, strategy, and the intricate politics of our world. I had led warriors into battle against rival packs when others hesitated. I had made hard decisions that saved lives and yet they dared call me weak? An Omega? My fists clenched tightly at my sides, nails digging into my palms. The first act I would take as Alpha was crystal clear in my mind…I would dissolve this entire council and appoint new advisors. I lifted my chin, refusing to show even a flicker of the rage burning inside me. A calm, composed smile curved my lips. “I only came to check on you, Father. The maid said you were feeling well enough to hold a meeting. I didn’t want to disturb you. That would have been rude of me.” He returned my smile, though I could see the strain in it, and reached for my arm, gently pulling me into the room. “Come. I would love to introduce you to the council, Freya.” I stepped inside with measured grace, my posture straight and commanding. The elders watched me with forced admiration, but I could feel the doubt radiating from them like a cold draft. Let them doubt. I would prove every single one of them wrong. “These men and women you see before you,” Father announced, his voice steady despite his visible fatigue, “are the Alpha Council. Their duty is to serve the Alpha and act as trusted advisors. They help strategize in times of war and peace, and they have the solemn responsibility to call out the Alpha if he or she ever errs. When I eventually step down…” I swallowed hard, my chest tightening painfully. The reminder that I was going to lose him the same way I had lost my mother… slowly, cruelly, to Wolf Syndrome, gnawed at my heart. I wanted to scream, to rage against the unfairness of it all. But I kept my face composed, my shoulders squared. A true Alpha did not show weakness. “…they will serve you just as they have served me and the Alphas before me.” The room fell into expectant silence. I met the gaze of each elder in turn, letting them see the steel in my eyes. Some shifted uncomfortably. Good. “I look forward to working with all of you,” I said, my voice clear and resonant, carrying the natural authority I had long suppressed while living as Summer. “I have spent years preparing for this role. Studying our laws, our history, our alliances, and our enemies. I have led our warriors in battle and made decisions that protected this pack when others wavered. I do not take the responsibility of leading the Golden City lightly.” I paused, allowing my words to sink in. “But I will not lead as a shadow of the past. I will lead with strength, vision, and loyalty to those who deserve it. I expect the same loyalty in return.” A few elders exchanged uneasy glances. One older man opened his mouth as if to speak, but I continued before he could. “I know some of you doubt me,” I said calmly, a faint, confident smile touching my lips. “That is understandable. Doubt has always been the first test of a true leader. I welcome the chance to prove myself… not just to you, but to our entire pack.” I could feel my father’s hand reach out and gently grasp mine in silent support. I turned to look at him, and the pride shining in his tired eyes nearly brought me to tears. After everything…the years away, the rejection, the pain… he still believed in me completely. That unwavering trust anchored me even as rage simmered just beneath my skin. “We will serve you, our Alpha,” the council elders chorused, bowing their heads in a show of reverence. Their words were correct, but I could still sense the reluctance behind them. I exhaled slowly, forcing a calm smile. “Thank you,” I said, my voice steady and regal. Turning back to my father, I added softly, “You must excuse me now, Father. I’m quite tired.” He nodded with understanding. “Rest well, my daughter. We will speak more tomorrow.” With his approval, I walked out of the hall with measured steps, my head held high. The moment the heavy doors closed behind me, my blood began boiling again. The rage I had suppressed during the meeting bubbled dangerously close to the surface. Those snakes had dared question my right to lead… me, who had trained for this role my entire life. As soon as I reached my room, I shut the door firmly behind me and leaned against it for a moment, breathing deeply. The anger needed an outlet. I walked to the open window, where moonlight spilled across the floor like liquid silver. Outside, three brown beta wolves patrolled the grounds, their forms visible in the distance. The moment they moved out of sight, I didn’t hesitate. I leapt from the window, shifting mid-air with fluid power. My bones reshaped, fur rippled across my skin, and I landed on all fours as my true wolf form emerged. A massive black wolf with striking streaks of crimson running through my fur like veins of fire. The night wind rushed through my coat, making it dance. I was also bigger and stronger than most Alpha wolves. Without wasting another second, I surged forward, paws pounding silently across the grass. The wind whipped past me as I raced toward the towering fence that separated our mansion from the rest of the pack. I cleared the towering fence in one powerful leap and raced toward the dense woods within the estate. The mansion grew smaller behind me with every stride, its lights fading into distant pinpricks. My paws pounded the earth, kicking up dirt and leaves in my wake. The wind rushed through my fur, carrying the wild scent of pine, moss, and freedom. I ran until my muscles burned with exhilaration, pushing myself harder than I had in years. Only when I burst into a wide, moonlit clearing did I finally slow to a stop. My chest heaved as I lifted my muzzle toward the sky and let out a powerful, resonant howl. The sound echoed through the trees like thunder. I followed it with two more consecutive howls, pouring my fury, my grief, and my unyielding resolve into the night. Then I heard it… sharp snap of a branch behind me. My ears perked instantly. My nose flared, testing the air. I remained perfectly still, every sense on high alert. I wasn’t alone. Others were watching me from the darkness. Their scent was foreign and not of our pack. It carried the sharp, bitter tang of outsiders… I could also feel the malicious intent from them. I spun toward the sound, lips curling back to reveal sharp fangs. My hellhound blood surged, flooding me with strength. “Show yourselves!” I sent the command through a powerful mind wave that rippled outward like a shockwave. Silence answered at first and the woods seemed to hold their breath. For a fleeting moment, I wondered if they had already slipped away. But their scent lingered, growing stronger. Low, menacing snarls rumbled from the shadows. I counted at least six. “Show yourselves. Now!” I demanded, my mental voice laced with Alpha authority and a clear warning. “As you wish… Princess.” The response came cold and mocking, dripping with malice. Then, without warning, three massive black wolves exploded from the treeline like lightning, charging straight toward me. Their eyes glowed a bright, unnatural gold in the moonlight. Rogues!
