Chapter 5

Leon’s POV I stormed through the wide glass doors of the massive hospital, my brows furrowed so deeply they ached. The sterile scent of antiseptic and polished floors did nothing to calm the fire raging in my chest. Nurses and staff bowed their heads in deference as I passed, but I paid them no mind. My focus was laser-sharp on one person: the doctor. Waiting patients parted like the sea before my beta bodyguards and me. I clutched my phone in a white-knuckled grip, replaying every chaotic moment from the night before. My blood was still boiling. “Where is she?” I demanded, voice low and sharp as I zeroed in on the nearest nurse. The woman startled so badly the dish tray in her hands clattered, nearly slipping from her grip. Fear flooded her eyes as she looked up at me, her whole body shrinking under the weight of my presence. She pointed a trembling finger down the corridor, too scared to speak at first. “I will need you to use your mouth,” I growled, stepping closer. “Now.” “She’s in the theatre, Alpha. She’s currently undergoing—” I didn’t wait for her to finish. My long strides carried me forward, ignoring her frantic calls behind me. Fragments of her words reached me…theatre… operation… patient, but they barely registered. All I could hear was the thunder of my own heartbeat. I shoved open the door to the operating theatre, ignoring the glowing red warning light. The room fell into stunned silence. The doctor stood frozen at the table in her green scrubs, hair tucked under a surgical cap, mask covering most of her face. A scalpel gleamed in her gloved hand. Every nurse’s eyes widened in horror at my intrusion. “Alpha… we are quite busy. Could you please—” “Did you give Summer the medical report?” My voice cut through the room like a blade. The doctor blinked rapidly, clearly rattled. “Alpha, I… I don’t understand. We’re in the middle of a delicate operation. If you could just wait in my office—” I took another step closer, my presence filling the sterile space. “A simple yes or no. Did you issue the medical report to her? Did you hand it over when she asked?” She glanced desperately at the unconscious patient on the table, then back at me. Sweat beaded on her forehead. I could hear her pulse racing. “Talk now,” I growled, low and threatening, “or I’ll drag you out of this room and leave your patient to whatever fate awaits him.” She swallowed hard and gave a quick, reluctant nod. Satisfaction mixed with my anger. “I’ll be in your office,” I said coldly. “Don’t keep me waiting.” I turned on my heel and left, the door swinging shut behind me with a heavy thud. My phone rang again as I reached the office. Chloe. I pinched the bridge of my nose, adjusting my glasses before answering. “Where are you, Leon?” Her voice came through laced with worry and a hint of tears. “I’ll be home soon,” I replied, forcing a steadier tone. “I’m handling something important right now. I’ll call you back as soon as I’m done.” “Okay… that’s fine. I just hope you’re alright. Father wants me for something. I love you, Leon.” I swallowed the strange lump in my throat and forced a smile she couldn’t see. “I love you too.” The words tasted heavier than they should have. I ended the call and slipped the phone back into my breast pocket. Pushing open the door to the doctor’s spacious office, I dropped onto the leather couch and crossed my legs, trying to rein in my racing thoughts. I unwrapped a mint gum, popped it into my mouth, and chewed slowly. The cool, sharp flavor did little to clear my head. Last night kept crashing over me in vivid flashes. Summer’s aura shifting so suddenly…powerful, commanding, unmistakably that of an Alpha. How had I missed it? Had she been deceiving me this entire time, pretending to be a weak Omega while hiding her true strength? The way she had glared at me with such confidence, as if she could take me on without breaking a sweat… it unnerved me more than I cared to admit. And how the hell had she known about the mating announcement party? I never sent her an invitation. Yet she had walked in like she belonged there, certain I had asked her to come. There were too many unanswered questions. Too many things I wished I had demanded answers for before throwing her out into the night. I pulled out my phone again and scrolled to her contact. My thumb hovered over the call button. For several long seconds, I stared at her name, Summer, before sighing in defeat and pocketing the device. After everything that had transpired, she would probably rather rip my throat out than speak to me. The door creaked open. The doctor stepped inside, still wearing her scrubs and reeking of blood and surgical chemicals. She looked exhausted and terrified. “I’m so sorry, Alpha… I never meant—” “Sit.” I cut her off calmly, gesturing to the couch opposite me. She sat hesitantly, her hands twisting in her lap. I could hear every erratic beat of her heart, see the tiny streak of sweat sliding down her temple and the way her breathing hitched. She was on the verge of breaking. “I promise you, Alpha,” she whispered, tears already filling her eyes. “I wanted to tell you. I didn’t want to give her the report, but she insisted. She threatened to report the hospital for performing illegal abortions. I could have lost my license… been dragged through Facegram and the media. No one would work with me again. I have pups at home to feed and a sick mother who depends on me. I couldn’t let my family suffer.” Her sobs grew louder, raw and desperate. My clenched fist slowly loosened. The red-hot anger I had carried into the hospital began to cool into something heavier, pity. She looked so small and broken sitting there. “I forgive you,” I said quietly. Her head snapped up, eyes wide with disbelief. “You… you do?” “Yes.” I stood and brushed invisible dust from my shirt. “But next time, you come to me first. I pour millions of credits into this hospital as its benefactor. Never forget that.” I turned toward the door when her shaky voice stopped me again. “Alpha… there’s something else.” I paused, tilting my head slightly. “Summer never went through with the abortion.” The words struck me like a physical blow. My heart slammed against my ribs. I kept my back to her, fighting to keep my expression neutral even as shock ripped through me. “She didn’t?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm. “No. She asked me to forge the report. She kept the pregnancy. She stopped the procedure midway.” Silence stretched between us. I nodded once, jaw tight. “Okay then,” I said, forcing the words out. “Thank you for informing me.” I yanked the door open and slammed it shut behind me, the sound reverberating down the long, sterile hallway like a gunshot. She kept it. The realization burned through every vein in my body as I strode out of the hospital and into the waiting car. Summer was still carrying my child and I had thrown her away like she was worthless. The mate bond had snapped, but this… this changed everything. Guilt, confusion, and a dangerous spark of something I didn’t want to name twisted inside my chest as the city blurred past the windows. What the hell had I done?
