We sat in silence for a while, watching the fire. His hand traced patterns on my arm — soothing, absent-minded. Wolves groomed each other for comfort, I'd read somewhere. Maybe this was his version of that. "What do we do?" I finally asked. "About Trevor." "I kill him." "Fao." "It is simple. He is a threat. I eliminate the threat. Problem solved." "You can't just kill people." "Why not?" He seemed genuinely confused. "In the wild, when a predator threatens your pack, you kill it. This is no different." "It's very different. There are laws. Consequences. If you kill him, they'll come for you. Put you in a cage, or worse." The thought made my chest tight. "I can't lose you. Not because of him." Fao's jaw tightened. "Then what? We wait for him to hurt you?" "No. We find another way."
