FATE SHIFTED

549 Words
Far above the council chambers, Amaris still stood at the balcony, unaware of the web tightening beneath her feet. The wind carried a faint echo - the sound of doors closing, of whispers gathering like a storm on the horizon. Then the air changed. A shiver rippled through the stone - soft at first, like the castle itself had drawn breath. The torches along the outer walls flared blue, their flames bending backward against the wind. A pulse of light - faint, rhythmic - trembled across the courtyard, as if something beneath the earth had awakened. Amaris set down her cup, heart pounding. The teacup rattled against the stone ledge, though no wind touched it. From the far tower came a sudden cry, followed by the distant crash of shattering glass. The wards - invisible threads of protection woven through the castle - flickered to life for a heartbeat, glowing gold against the dark, then broke apart like torn silk. Elias reappeared at her side, sword drawn, the faint shimmer of angelic sigils burning along the blade's edge. "They've breached the wards," he said, voice low and lethal. "No one should have been able to." Another pulse hit - stronger this time - and for a moment, Amaris swore she saw something unfurl in the sky above the towers: vast, translucent wings made of light and shadow both, spreading across the clouds before dissolving. Far below, alarms began to sound, a chorus of clanging bells echoing through the halls. Somewhere in the dark, fate shifted - and the fracture began to stir. --- Far above the council chambers, Amaris still stood at the balcony, unaware of the web tightening beneath her feet. The wind carried a faint echo - the sound of doors closing, of whispers gathering like a storm on the horizon. Then the air changed. A low hum vibrated through the stone, soft at first, like the castle itself had drawn breath. The torches along the walls flared blue, their flames bowing backward against the wind. A pulse of light shimmered through the courtyard - faint, rhythmic - as if something ancient beneath the earth had awakened. Amaris lifted her gaze to the sky. There, the darkness fractured. Streams of color streaked across the heavens - silver, violet, and deep blue - trailing like shooting stars. Flashes ignited between them, rippling like wings spread wide across the clouds, too vast and bright to belong to any mortal being. Her breath caught. The sight was terrible and beautiful all at once, divine and wrong in equal measure. Then the hum deepened - pressing against her skull, her chest, her pulse. The world tilted. The cup slipped from her fingers, shattering against the balcony floor. "Amaris?" Elias's voice cut through the ringing in her ears, distant and distorted. The colors above twisted, collapsing inward into a single burst of white light. The force hit her like a wave - her vision swimming, her knees buckling beneath her. She tried to breathe, to speak, but the air had turned to static, her heartbeat to thunder. She fell. "Amaris!" Elias's voice broke through the noise - sharp, desperate - before everything went dark.
