I tried to keep myself together, but damn, it was harder than I thought. Grey was on a whole different wavelength tonight—like she was on cloud nine. Was it just because I was back? No, it had to be more than that. Her energy was different—warmer, freer. The way she laughed and moved made it impossible not to be drawn in. We kept talking and joking as we headed up the river, walking towards the gathering place where the pack usually met for parties. The swimming hole was just up ahead, deep enough and free of branches, perfect for a dive. The sun was sinking low, painting everything in an amber glow. It felt like we were walking through a different world. When we reached the spot, I expected a pause, maybe a moment where she’d hesitate or wait for me. But Grey didn’t even stop to think.
