I watch her storm off, every step she takes away from me feeling like a punch to the gut. "Wait!" I called after her, my voice breaking slightly. She doesn't stop. She doesn’t even turn around. My shoulders sag, and a wave of failure crashes over me. Why do I always mess things up? I run a hand through my hair, frustration and self-hate swirling inside of me like a storm. I wanted this to be different—she was supposed to be different. All I've tried to do is show her that I'm not like the others, that I actually care, that I see her.
