Chapter Six
On Saturday morning Joe went off to play golf as usual. He’d invited his brother-in-law along, but Harry felt the same way about golf as Caroline did, and politely refused. Harry said he had to go into the office and also mentioned something about sorting out a few financial matters, so Joe went alone.
Caroline and Lizzy set out for Mary’s house, stopping briefly along the way at a local bakery to procure three outrageously oversized blueberry muffins.
“You’ll like Mary,” Caroline said, as they pulled up outside the house. “She’s really clever but also really down to earth.”
It was still quite cold outside for late spring and Mary bundled her guests into the warm kitchen while she made coffee and got plates for their cakes.
