Chapter Twenty Five
A week passed. Caroline forgave Lizzy for her antics, in the name of harmony. It helped that Joe was so unassuming he never even realised the poor girl had been flirting with him in the first place.
On Saturday morning, at Lizzy’s continued insistence, Caroline arranged to meet Mary in town. It was raining heavily and they found themselves crammed into the corner of a department store café.
Caroline went to the counter while Lizzy and Mary squeezed in among the buggies, bags and umbrellas.
“So how have you been?” asked Mary.
“Harry and I have been struggling with some financial issues. All my fault really. But we’re almost back on an even keel now. And I’ve got a new job!”
