“Explain it.” Adrian’s voice cut through the room before the silence had time to settle. The tablet in his hand glowed between us like evidence placed on a courtroom table. My eyes stayed on the screen, but my mind struggled to keep pace with what I had just heard. His father. The name attached to the adoption signature was unmistakable. For a moment, the room felt smaller. The air is thicker. Every quiet second stretched too long. “I didn’t know,” I said. The words sounded thin the moment they left my mouth. Adrian didn’t move. His gaze stayed fixed on me, sharp and unreadable. “You expect me to believe that?” I lifted my eyes slowly. “I didn’t even know I was adopted until tonight.” Something flickered across his face. Not quite disbelief. Not quite acceptance. Just a calculation
