CHAPTER 14: THE QUEEN'S CHOICE

1636 Words
The Crown of the Moon Kings floated silently above the crystal pedestal. It was beautiful. Unlike Ronan's Silver Crown, which carried an oppressive darkness, this crown seemed alive. Thin silver vines wrapped around its edges. Tiny moonstones shimmered like captured stars. The moment Selene looked at it... She felt something. Not power. Not greed. A feeling she hadn't experienced in years. Home. --- The shadow watched her carefully. "You feel it, don't you?" Selene didn't answer. The stranger smiled. "The crown remembers your blood." "It knows you." "It has been waiting for you." Kael stepped closer. "Don't listen to him." The shadow glanced at him. "You always were protective." "Almost admirable." Kael's eyes narrowed. "You know nothing about me." "I know everything." The shadow circled slowly. "I know the night you lost your parents." "I know the guilt you carried." "I know why you built your empire." A pause. "Because controlling a company was easier than controlling the fear of losing someone again." Selene looked at Kael. For a brief moment... His expression changed. The shadow had struck something real. --- "Enough." Kael's voice became colder. The air around him shifted. The Lycan King emerged. Not fully transformed. But enough. The shadow laughed. "Still pretending you're only a man." "You are just as much a beast as I am." "No." Kael's golden eyes burned. "The difference between us..." "...is that I choose what I become." The shadow's smile faded slightly. --- Selene looked between them. For years, she had thought strength meant never being afraid. Never showing weakness. Never needing anyone. But standing in that ancient kingdom... She realized something. Everyone carried their own battles. Kael carried his fear. Ronan carried his ambition. Orion carried his regret. And now... She had to carry her own choice. She slowly walked toward the crown. "Selene." Kael's voice stopped her. She turned. His expression was serious. "You don't have to do this." Everyone stared. Even the shadow. Kael continued, "You don't owe anyone a throne." "You don't owe anyone a kingdom." "You don't have to become what they want you to be." Selene's eyes softened. "Then why did you bring me here?" "Because I promised to protect you." "And protecting me means letting me choose." For a moment... Kael had no answer. Because she was right. --- Selene reached the pedestal. The closer she got... The brighter the crown became. The shadow's eyes narrowed. "Take it." "Claim your power." "With that crown, you could destroy every person who hurt you." "You could make sure no one ever takes anything from you again." Selene stopped. The words were tempting. Very tempting. She thought of her mother being taken. Her childhood being hidden from her. Her entire identity being a secret. She thought of all the pain. All the fear. All the helplessness. Then... She remembered Eleanor. Her mother's gentle smile. The way she always told her: "Kindness is not weakness, Selene." She closed her eyes. "No." The shadow tilted its head. "No?" Selene opened her eyes. "I don't want power because I'm angry." "I don't want a throne because I want revenge." Her hand reached toward the crown. "I want the strength to protect the people I love." The crown began to glow. Brighter. Brighter. Until the entire chamber was filled with silver light. --- The moment Selene's fingers touched the crown... A vision overwhelmed her. She stood inside the Moon Palace. But this time... It wasn't the past. It was the future. The palace was burning. The kingdom was falling. Bodies of warriors covered the ground. And standing in the center of it all... Was Selene. Older. Wearing the crown. Her eyes were no longer silver. They were completely black. A voice whispered: "Every queen must sacrifice something." The older Selene looked at her. And said four words. "Don't become me." The vision shattered. --- Selene fell backward. Kael caught her instantly. "Selene!" She grabbed his arm, breathing heavily. "I saw..." "What?" She looked toward the crown. "I saw myself." "Years from now." "And..." Her voice trembled. "I was the enemy." The room went silent. The shadow smiled. "Now you understand." "The crown doesn't choose heroes." "It chooses survivors." The crown floated above Selene's hands. Waiting. The ancient kingdom held its breath. And then... A voice echoed from the crown itself. Not the shadow. Not Alaric. Not the Guardians. A woman's voice. Gentle. Familiar. "My daughter..." Selene froze. Her eyes widened. "Mother?" The voice whispered: "Before you take the crown..." "You must learn the truth about why you were hidden." The chamber doors behind the crown slowly opened. And inside... Stood Eleanor. Alive. For a moment... No one moved. No one breathed. Selene stared at the woman standing beyond the ancient doors. Her silver hair was messy. Her clothes were torn. Her face was pale from exhaustion. But those eyes... Those warm, familiar eyes... They were the same eyes that had watched over Selene her entire life. "Mom..." The word left Selene's lips like a whisper. Then louder— "Mom!" She ran. Eleanor barely had time to open her arms before Selene crashed into her. The moment they touched... Everything Selene had been holding inside broke. The fear. The confusion. The anger. All of it. She cried against her mother's shoulder. "I thought I lost you." Eleanor held her tightly. "I'm sorry." "I'm so sorry, my baby." "I should have told you." Selene pulled back, tears covering her face. "You knew?" Eleanor closed her eyes. "Yes." "You knew who I was?" A painful silence followed. Then... "Yes." Selene stepped back. The answer hurt more than she expected. --- Kael watched silently. For the first time since Selene had known him... He saw her as something other than a fighter. She was just a daughter who wanted answers. Eleanor noticed him. Her expression softened. "Kael." He bowed his head slightly. "Eleanor." Selene looked between them. "You know each other too?" Eleanor sighed. "Yes." "Kael was there the night I took you away." Selene froze. "What?" --- The room became completely silent. Even Ronan stopped moving. Eleanor looked toward the ancient crown. "The night the Moon Palace fell..." "I wasn't supposed to survive." "The Shadow army had already entered." "Your father and mother knew they couldn't defeat them." Selene's hands trembled. "My real parents..." Eleanor nodded. "They gave you to me." "They trusted me to hide you." Tears filled her eyes. "Your mother held you one last time." "She told me..." "Please let my daughter grow up knowing love, not war." Selene covered her mouth. Her heart ached. "Why didn't you tell me?" Eleanor looked broken. "Because every person who knew your identity was hunted." "I wasn't protecting a secret." "I was protecting you." --- The shadow standing near the crown suddenly laughed. "A beautiful story." Everyone turned. The stranger smiled. "But incomplete." Eleanor's face hardened. "You." "You were the reason my daughter lost everything." The shadow tilted his head. "Lost?" "No." "I gave her a chance to become powerful." "You destroyed a child." The shadow shrugged. "Children become adults." "And adults make choices." --- Kael stepped forward. "You've talked enough." The shadow looked amused. "Still trying to play hero?" Kael's claws extended. "No." "I'm ending this." The moment he moved— The entire chamber shook. The shadow raised one hand. Black energy exploded outward. Kael blocked the attack, but the force pushed him several meters backward. Selene's eyes widened. "Kael!" He steadied himself. His expression remained calm. But everyone noticed. The shadow was stronger than they expected. --- Alaric stepped forward. "The Vault cannot be opened for long." "The Crown must choose." The shadow smiled. "Then let it choose." He looked at Selene. "Take the crown." "Or watch everyone you love die protecting you." Selene's expression changed. The old temptation returned. Power. The ability to stop this. To never be helpless again. Her fingers tightened. Then... She looked at Kael. At Eleanor. At the people who had fought for her. And she understood. The crown wasn't asking if she was powerful. It was asking what kind of person she would become. --- Selene slowly reached for the crown. Everyone held their breath. The moment her fingers touched it... A wave of silver light exploded throughout the chamber. The shadow stepped backward. For the first time... Fear appeared on his face. "No..." The crown rose into the air. Ancient symbols surrounded Selene. A voice echoed: "Blood alone does not make a queen." "Power alone does not make a ruler." "A queen is chosen by what she protects." The light faded. The crown rested gently on Selene's head. But something was different. She didn't feel stronger. She didn't feel invincible. She felt... Peace. --- The Royal Guardians outside immediately lowered themselves. The entire underground kingdom bowed. Even the Guardian Drake lowered its massive head. Alaric smiled. "After eight hundred years..." "The Moon Throne has a queen again." Eleanor cried quietly. "My little girl..." Selene touched the crown. "I'm still me." Kael looked at her. "That's exactly why you were chosen." --- But the celebration lasted only a moment. A loud crack echoed. Everyone turned. The shadow stood beside the broken pedestal. The darkness around him had grown larger. "You think this changes anything?" His voice was no longer playful. "You have the crown." "But you don't have the throne." Selene frowned. "What?" The shadow smiled. "The Moon Throne is not in this kingdom." "It's hidden." "Waiting for the final heir." He looked directly at Kael. "And only the Lycan King can unlock it." Silence. Slowly... Everyone turned toward Kael. Selene's heart sank. "What does that mean?" Kael didn't answer. Because he already knew. The shadow laughed. "Tell her." "Tell her what happened the night her parents died." Kael's expression darkened. The secret he had buried for twenty-one years... Was finally coming back.
