Running From Mate?

574 Words
It was Roxara's 20th birthday and she had grown into a beautiful woman. She had an hourglass figure with long black hair and piercing grey eyes. She awoke early, and with a small step and a creak she woke up her mother. They have shared a bedroom in the main pack house since she was born. Roxara slept on an old mattress in the corner with only what her mom could get for her: a big old comforter, one worn down yellow pillow, and a baby blanket she held dear to her heart that she named Wolfy.       Her mom looked to her, and with little emotion spoke: "Happy birthday dear. Try not to cause trouble today and remember not to stir the pot with the others. Just keep your head down and they'll leave you alone"      "Thank you—and yes mother I know, but shouldn't I stand u- never mind, I will do as I’m told, but I’m going out to the woods for a run… You know my Wolf gets antsy when we haven’t run for a while." With a quick hug, her mom went back bed and out the door she went.       The sun barely shone through the horizon. She positioned her iPod for the shift and put on her running playlist. Darkside by Kelly Clarkson came on and she bolted; she was one of the fastest in the tribe.       The music soothed her internal pain. As she ran through the woods didn't notice her Wolf shouting ‘MATE’ in her head. She was too focused on the music. Thinking she was alone and far from the pack on the edge of border she shifted; she was never one to be body shy. She started to sing loud on a cliff as the sun rose over the picturesque lake below her.        She belted “Like a diamond from black dust It's hard to know what can become if you give up So don't give up on me Please remind me who I really am Everybody's got a dark side Do you love me? Can you love mine?!"      The mysterious stranger lingered in the shadows mesmerized by her singing. As the song came to an end, Roxara heard a rustle behind her. In a flash, she shifted and ran. The music continued to play, and she was so focused on making sure she wouldn’t get in trouble for being out that she didn’t pay any mind to her wolf yelling.       She got to back to the pack house. It was truly beautiful—a summer camp style mansion sitting in front of the lake. Once she calmed down and got into her room to change, she finally heard her wolf. “Dammit girl, MATE.” With a gasp, she asked her wolf “what where how when?!”      “Ugh in the woods by the cliff. You missed MATE, and you ran!? What wolf runs from a rustle in the woods?”      “Dammit I’m so stupid! I wasn’t paying attention again... A mate could’ve made things better for us…or at least shown us the kindness that no one else does’      With a heavy sigh, Roxara went back to reality, but this time, with a small hope to meet her mate once more, she did it with a little spring in her step.
