Aria's Resolve

412 Words
Kael and Aria made their way to the docks, hoping to escape the town and start anew. But as they boarded the boat, a group of thugs ambushed them, led by Marcus. "You're not going anywhere," Marcus sneered, his eyes blazing with anger. Aria's eyes widened in fear as Marcus pulled out a small pouch and spoke into it. A voice on the other end replied, and Marcus's smile grew wider. "You see, Aria, I've taken your mother hostage," Marcus said, his voice dripping with malice. "If you don't come back with me, I'll slit her throat." Aria's face paled, and she looked at Kael with tears in her eyes. Kael's magic surged, ready to defend her, but he knew he had to be careful. Marcus's voice grew more menacing. "You have a choice to make, Aria. Your mother's life, or your freedom. Choose." Aria's eyes locked onto Kael's, and he saw the desperation there. She knew what she had to do. "I'll come with you," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. Kael's heart sank as Aria walked back to Marcus, her eyes downcast. He knew he couldn't intervene without putting Aria's mother in greater danger. As they returned to town, Kael's anger grew. He knew he had to find Aria, to protect her from Marcus's wrath. But when he finally found her, she was strung up on a tree, accused of adultery. The villagers had gathered around, their faces twisted with cruelty. Aria's body was battered, her skin lacerated from the whipping. Kael's magic surged, fueled by the memories of Elara's death. He saw red, his anger boiling over. With a wave of his hand, Kael unleashed his fiery magic, killing every man standing. The villagers scattered, screaming in terror. Kael approached Aria, his magic gently removing her from the tree. He held out his hand, his eyes locked onto hers. But Aria didn't take his hand. Instead, she shrank back, her eyes filled with fear. "Why have you come into my life?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Please leave." Kael's face twisted in disgust. He had saved her, risked everything for her, and this was how she repaid him? Without a word, Kael turned and walked away, leaving the town behind. He knew he'd never forget Aria, but he also knew he'd never go back. As he disappeared into the distance, Aria's soft sobs echoed through the silence, a poignant reminder of the complexity of human emotions.
