Chapter 11: The Fountain Incident

778 Words
Riley's POV The outdoor charity event sparkled with crystal glasses and designer gowns as I weaved through the crowd, carrying a tray of champagne flutes, trying to stay invisible. "Riley, darling!" Victoria Sterling's voice cut through the garden party chatter. "Come serve us, won't you?" Victoria – Brett's ex-fiancée who'd cheated on him with his business partner two years ago. She'd returned to New York last month, determined to reclaim what she saw as rightfully hers. Including Brett. She looked exactly the same, blonde perfection in a way that cost thousands monthly to maintain. Personal trainer, nutritionist, stylist, dermatologist. Everything money could buy, everything I'd never have. Two years ago, she'd thrown away a man worth eight billion dollars for a quick thrill with his business partner. Now she wanted him back, and women like Victoria Sterling always got what they wanted. Her diamond tennis bracelet caught the light as she gestured, it probably worth more than most people's houses. I was just an obstacle to remove. I approached her circle of friends, all perfectly manicured socialites with predatory smiles as Brett stood nearby, discussing business with potential investors, but I caught his quick glance in my direction. "How lovely," one of Victoria's friends purred. "The little charity case is playing waitress." "Careful, Priscilla," Victoria laughed, her blue eyes glittering with malice. "She might spill on your Hermès." Victoria Sterling – old money, trust fund baby, never worked a day in her life. Everything I wasn't. Everything Brett's world expected him to be with. The circle of women closed in tighter, their predatory smiles widening. I'd seen this before the pack mentality of wealthy women who'd never faced real hardship. They fed off humiliation like sharks sensing blood. "Tell me, Riley," another woman purred, "how does it feel to be Brett's little project?" "Charity work," Priscilla laughed. "Though I suppose we all have our hobbies." My grip tightened on the tray. Brett's voice carried from across the patio, deep and commanding as he discussed merger details. He had no idea what was happening behind him. I kept my expression neutral, extending the tray. "Champagne?" "Actually, I think I need something stronger." Priscilla's elbow "accidentally" bumped my arm. The tray tilted as I scrambled to catch it, but gravity won. The glasses crashed to the ground, champagne splashing across the marble patio. "Oh my!" Victoria gasped dramatically. "How clumsy!" Before I could react, a hand shoved me backward. Hard. I stumbled, arms windmilling, and plunged into the decorative fountain behind me as cold water engulfed me, soaking through my dress instantly. Camera flashes erupted as photographers captured every humiliating second. I surfaced, gasping, water streaming down my face. My dress clung to my body, completely see-through. The entire party had stopped to stare as gasps and whispers rippled through the crowd. Someone's phone was recording this would be on social media within minutes. The water was freezing, seeping through my skin and into my bones. My mascara ran in dark streaks down my cheeks. Victoria stood at the fountain's edge, her expression perfectly innocent except for the satisfied glint in her eyes. She'd orchestrated this perfectly, and we both knew it. "Riley!" Brett's voice boomed across the garden. "What the hell is wrong with you?" He strode over, his face thunderous. "This is a five-thousand-dollar-a-plate charity event, not a swimming pool!" "I'm sorry, I" "Sorry, don't clean up this mess." He grabbed my arm, hauling me from the fountain. "You're making a spectacle of yourself." The photographers snapped away. I could already see tomorrow's headlines: "Billionaire's Girlfriend Takes Unexpected Dip." "Brett, please" "Don't." His grip tightened. "You've done enough damage for one evening." He said as his jaw clenched as camera flashes continued. This was about his reputation, his image. I was a liability he couldn't afford to show weakness toward. The business investors watched our every move, judging whether Brett Graham could control his own girlfriend. He dragged me toward the house, leaving a trail of water and humiliation behind us. But as we passed Victoria, I caught something in Brett's eyes when he looked at her. Pure, cold hatred. Maybe I wasn't the only one being tested tonight. Two days had passed since the fountain incident. The photos were everywhere – social media, gossip blogs, even the financial news. "Billionaire's Girlfriend Takes a Dive" dominated headlines. Brett had barely spoken to me since, his jaw tight with controlled fury every time we appeared in public together. Tonight's business dinner with the Hartwells was my chance to prove I was more than just a liability. I straightened my shoulders and followed Brett into the restaurant's private dining room
