As I lay in bed weighing my options, I can't help but think of what kind of future I'll have. If I fail, what will happen? Will I be banished and turned rogue? Will he kill me? Will he take me as my mistress while my sister is his Luna? So many questions swirl inside my head while I fall into a restless sleep.
I find myself in a familiar position while waiting in the foyer of the packhouse. My stomach is filled with butterflies threatening to escape through my throat. My wolf is oddly quiet. I'm scared. I have no idea what the first task will be, but I shall soon find out.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see another omega walking my way.
"This way, miss, it's time to start your trial."
With a deep sigh, I follow her to the far end of a hallway into oak wooden doors. Inside is an arena, and I'm ushered to center stage. The Alpha, Luna, Rhys, and his sister Bonita are sitting there. Watching me with scrutiny.
Luna looks up at me. "Well, I'm surprised you came. I'm quite surprised, I was sure you would scurry away to whatever rock you climbed out of and hide. Pity. No matter. We will start momentarily, but as this is a monumental event, I think we should wait for our guests."
Just as she said that, the rows and rows of seats started filling up with pack members and Alphas and Lunas from other packs. I felt like I couldn't breathe, but I tried my best not to show it. I straightened my back and kept my head held high. I will not let these people intimidate me.
"Monroe, are you with me?"
'Until the very end, Amara. Always.'
Her words give me the assurance I need.
About 20 minutes later, all the sears were filled, and silence filled the room. "Alright, everyone. We will get started. The first trial will be a riddle. You will have 10 minutes to think it over and come up with the answer. Should you answer wrong, that will be a strike against you. Three strikes, and you're out. Two strikes, and you're out. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Luna." I say in a surprisingly strong voice.
"Alright, the riddle is, "I turn polar bears white and I will make you cry. I make guys have to pee, and girls comb their hair. I make celebrities look stupid, and normal people look like celebrities. I turn pancakes brown and make your champagne bubble. If you squeeze me, I'll pop, but if you'll look at me, you'll pop. Can you guess the riddle?"
"No." I say
"Excuse me, what did you say?" Luna glares at me.
"I meant no disrespected Luna. However, I don't have to think about the answer. The answer is no. At first, you had me confused by throwing random sentences at me, but then I realized the only real question you asked me was, "Can you guess the riddle?" Therefore, the answer is no." I say with a smile.
She looks at me for a few minutes and then sighs in defeat. " That's correct. You win this round, but the next one will not be so easy. You're free to go. We will reassemble tomorrow on the training grounds."
I leave with a sense of relief and empowerment. I've got this. I can do this.
'I've been telling you that all along, Amora.'
I smile at my wolf as I exit the doors of the packhouse and make my way back home.
